My 2.5 dse when sat on the drive for a while overheats. I rolled up a thin magazine put it in the fan and it stopped the fan very easily when engine was nearly overheating. There is no oil in the water or water in the oil. Shouldo you be able to stop a viscous fan so easy when engine is hot.

Think about fitting my aircon fans mod if your car has aircon. If all the rest of the cooling system is OK and the engine is not stuffed it will save you the cost of a new viscous fan.
