Hi all,
Starting to get into maintaining my 1997 disco now, and decided to check my front and rear axle diffs (oil levels).
rear was slightly low (less than 1/4 ltr to top up) but the front took loads!! about a 1.1/4ltr to top up!
been afew weeks now and noticed my front nearside swivel ball housing is very wet and have oil dripping down inside edge of front wheel, it also has the strong smell of the stuff i put in the diff. (ep90)
Could the oil in the diff get into the swivel area and is this somthing i can sort on say a weekend?
im used to servicing my own cars previously so just looking to be steered in the right direction so to speak.
Read busters rebuilds and happy to have a go but didnt want to be heading in the wrong direction.
Also any advise and tips (kits available to sort)etc very welcome, cheers.

jobs done so far:-
Spider removed soldered and refitted
ignition switch sorted
EGR system removed
De cat'ed (complete exhaust fitted)
to-do
sunroof leak / rattle to sort
doorlock springs on 3 doors to replace

Hi drover, the diff oil can get into the swivel if the seal in the axel is leaking.Take a look at busters photos.cheers elt.

That is exactly what I had with mine when I first got it. Followed Busters guide, replaced bearings as well as seals, and all was well. not a difficult job.

I've just replaced both my front drive shaft seals because of this!

it might be that somebody filled swivels with ep 90 as they were before ons shot grease and some still do as grease level cant be checked

so it could also be that the swivel has been filled with oil and is just leaking, going to recheck diff level if dropped..... oil from there if not just a leaking swivel that has been filled with oil? do you agree!

can i just unbolt the swivel housing from the axle and withdraw the half shaft or am i talking nuts!
infact what i'll do is shut up and go back and re-read busters photo stuff to get a handle on it! these things are always easyier once you get started!
i think i feel slightly out of my depth as things are sooo big haha!

Yes mate it's easy, take wheel off and main hub nut, and youll have to remove brakes and disc and there was 4 bolts holding the hub assembly to the steering knuckle undo them. and then I used a 3 armed puller and pulled the half shaft out. And pry the old seal out clean the area up! And put your new ones in DRY!

hes got a 300tdi sounds like youve got disco 2 different axles ,but on 300 you dont need to and shouldnt remove 2 bolts holding bottom swivel pin the top 2 allow housing to be removed from ball ,seal is in rear of chrome ball and would need stripping from outside in with removal of brake caliper ,hub and disc,stub axle ,swivel housing,ball ,
