I'm looking at buying this 1989 Landie tomorrow with Defender decals and the logbook says Defender. Is it actually a 110? What's the difference between the two models in any case?

The '110' ran from 1983-1990 and was originally fitted with a 2.5n/a or td engine the 110" defender started in 1990 and was fitted with a 200 tdi engine so it could be an early 200 (as it was registered on 25th October) or it could be something as simple as replacement doors

I'll ask which engine it came with - it's been replaced by a 300tdi.

Follow on question - perhaps for a different thread: do these 300s have either overheating or timing belt issues, and if so, how can I assess that when I see it tomorrow? Any other serious issues, like weak head gaskets etc?

The original engine was a turbo diesel which blew and has been replaced by a Disco's 300TDI (with 90,000 miles fyi).

Here's some MOT deets, which I guess refer to the original engine?

The model code breaks down into 110 (model) 4C (not sure) HCP (high-capacity?) DT (diesel turbo a.k.a 2.5td)
So it's a late 110 hi-cap, not a defender. Suspect it's a simple case of the doors being replaced for slightly later ones. In practical terms there's very little difference between the two anyway- main difference is the engine which isn't original anyway.

All vehicles can suffer from timing belt problems (ask me how I know) if you can't be certain when it was last changed then plan to do it fairly soon, no issues with head gaskets but the 'p' gasket can leak (between block and water pump housing) signs of this are staining at the front of the block behind the alternator which because the water pump is relatively high will cause over heating problems if the fluid level drops. A decent 300 should start without the use of glow plus almost straight away and back pressure from the oil cap or pressurised coolant hoses would point to headgasket / worn engine probles

300 had big issue in the day with timing belt shredding away on the front cover as the i/p was not correctly in line, different kits depending on vin number to rectify, any still running are bound to be fine, but if you see black dust coming from the breather hole you have problems!

My Defender is a pre-production run which was made as a LHD for the French Military to test out. Mine is a late 1990. I think you will find anything before then is a 110.

If it had a 2.5td it definitely isnt a Defender, they never had those, only TDI.

Some people dont like to post those sort of details on the public forum, for security reasons! ;)

So is it correct to say the 110 and Defender original specs were unchanged '89 to '90 except for the badges?

No. It was subtly updated in a few ways, but the main one was the engines. Ninety/One Ten had 2.5petrol, 2.5na, 2.5td or a few with V8.

200Tdi was introduced for the first Defenders.

So I'm now the proud owner of a 'wreck', according to my Mum! The diff needs a recon, three hub seals and the fuel tank sender gasket leak a bit, the roof and liner need replacing along with the rear 1/3 of the chassis and the outriggers (the front 2/3 having been painted and in good order), the steering box moans a wee bit, the mud flaps have torn off, it's overly emblazoned with checker plate everywhere except in the tub where it's needed and its original 110 hood badge has been painted over, with the rest of the vehicle and a Defender badge and decals added. Also, there's no floor liners, at all and the lighter socket doesn't work... but it'll be in perfect working order after these issues have been fixed and the seats replaced! I had a Landie fanatic put it up on his ramp and he reckons the chassis is in better nick than expected.

So I'm looking for an onside wing (3 panels), two sill panels (both sides) and two rear panels for behind the rear wheels (the triangular ones). The rest I have already sourced. I'll also be selling off a checker plated hood in good nick and the galvanised front bumper with bull bar (slightly scratched and rust showing in a few places). Any tips on where I can best find this stuff and sell the hood and bumper? Many thanks folks ;)
