Auto boxes need looked after just like any other, if I bought one and the oil was not bright red then it's getting changed, when it's fooked it goes brown.

Probably a good idea to clean or change the filter as well if it's high mileage, although you need to take off the gearbox sump to do that. Remember that everything must be spotlessly clean!
Mine (1999) seems to need the rear diff oil changing every couple of years too.
