Go for TDI power and 5 gears otherwise a 17 yo will beat it to death . my brother started with a c reg NA diesel 90 . when he'd killed 3 na engines we put a 200 in and it was quicker used less fuel and he didn't kill it

You've got to adapt your driving style to suit the drive train. Driving a series is more like driving a tractor than a car but Lord they are the most fun car to drive, I love driving mine far more than the fiesta I learn in, and my Dad prefers it to his TD5 110. Getting the power down smoothly and getting the right gear is key.
Embrace the pedestrian quality of the 2.5, dont try and drive it like a race car

Do you know anyone in worcester with a series 3? You could ask them to take it up to somewhere with private land for your son to have a go to get a feel for what ones like
Also insurance isnt horrific on them, expensive yes for a young driver, but cheaper than the normal chav mobiles you find every other 18 year old has. Fully comp in my own name is £1000. For learner insurance on the Golf diesel my mam has we got a quote of £1700, its crazy!
And get a series made in the early 70s for tax exemption

My mate had a series 3 for his first car, did a rebuild on it before passing his test and iwned a few series before that so was aquanted with them.
They're cheap insuarnce (for a 17 year old) simple, fairly cheap to buy and repair and in standard form pretty sedate (less crashes ) but tdi or V8 ones are fun to drive

Unusually, gotta agree with evil on all counts!
I used to use series in forestry work, regularly used to drive to Scotland and the north of England, often towing. Obviously not fast or comfortable, but fine with regular breaks to walk around.
A well maintained series wont break down any more than anything else, we always looked after ours, and I cant remember ever breaking down when we were away.
