Having used the great advice from other threads I've found I have a crack in the intercooler hose on the 2005 Freelander TD4. Clearly that has caused the black smoke and power loss. Advice sought is - is it worth it buying silicon hose? Suspect I'll go for straight replacement and wondered:
1. Where can I buy one to pick up straight away? I'm in Surrey/Berks border.
2. How easy is it to replace? The clip nearest the front of the car looks tricky.

How many miles has it done before the origonal gave up? how many more do you expect to do? then decide if you need to pay for silicon. No other advantage.
 
The main advantage is longevity, so yes, if you don't intend to keep it for life then go for the standard hoses, to save money. I fitted them as a "belt and braces" option, for peace of mind :)
 
Thanks for all your advice guys, very useful. I got 50000 miles out of the original so will go with 'normal' replacement. Just got to get it ordered. Cheers again.
 
I got 86K out of mine - then fitted a full set of silicon replacements - as I'm keeping mine - forever! :D

It's a durability / longevity thing, if you can purchase something which doesn't cost tons more, but will do it's job better for longer, then you buy it if you can. Or not. That's the great thing about choice. Oh, and to the folks who fit them, with the choice of colours they look the nuts too. In my opinion ;)
 
The question was how do they make a difference. I get the durability bit, although I'm still on original after 111000 miles and doubt many have had silicon for that long. Is there any evidence that they improve performance?
 
quality silicone hoses less likely to 'balloon' under pressure
therefore .. more immediate pressure to the intake manifold ..
( the 'ideal' post-turbo pre-intake .. would be a solid duct/pipe )

ecu 'sees' stronger airflow .. will supply more fuel on demand .. on time

slicker surface may aid airflow .. although with added turbo oil vapour .. that's a 'guess' :)

i don't think a NEW original spec. LR hose will balloon to it's detriment ..
be just that the silicone hose is stiffer .. so will deliver the pressure more efficiently to the intake manifold

or .. in other words .. the intake manifold will pressurise sooner ..
( although might be measuring that in milliseconds )

i guess i there was a need to figure the pressure limits of either hose material
that could be done .. .. be far in excess of what pressure the turbo will deliver
in standard form

everything is closed ..

has happened twice before in a car park ..
when i've gone to open the drivers door
( i think .. as i can't remember the exact sequence of events )

didn't go off again last night .. no sign of tampering to the vehicle

slept last night with the light on 'n a crowbar and torch by the bedside :-((

yeah .. i'll have to check out the sensors ..
i'm guessing it Might be connected to the drivers door ..
as the stereo speaker don't work on that .. although the tweeter does
and those are connected in parallel .. so maybe some corrosion
( the large speaker was replaced .. the original had corroded wiring
( the new one don't work .. so it must be the connection to the tweeter

i will have to research the security system wiring 'n sensors ..
be something i'm clueless about .. never having had one before

come to think of it .. the alarm weirdness has happened on days, when at some stage
.. i've used the key and not the fob .. to lock/unlock the drivers door
but it's not consistent at all ..

and i'm not sure if mine has an internal motion sensor .. or not ..
( was under the impression that was an 'option' )
but .. last night i'd left both side windows cracked open a few mm
'n one one of the other occassions i'd left the sunroof open ..
( twin panel lift-up type )

am almost afraid to go out now 'n open the drivers door :)))))
think i'll pop down to halfrauds 'n pick up a needed wire-cutter
open 'n close all the doors .. lock 'n unlock the lot ..
hopefully that will reset everything ..
crossfingers 'n knock-on-wood ..
( if it were an apple mac i'd know where to start looking for problem solving
( but this car-computer stuff is mind bending .. ... grrrrr :)

Thanks for the offer, I was only really interested to know if their really was any evidence of performance improvement.

Do you have a door open warning light to go with your miss-alarm. I had for about 9 months, it was the tailgate micro-switch, I think, ignored it as I didn't want to replace the lock. Two days ago it started working again out of the blue. Lights out again and hazards flash as normal when locking.

no .. :)
was wondering about that 'open door' sensor possibility ..
( i.e. if the door was alarm sensed to be 'open' surely the 'open-door' dashlight would be 'on' )
i've the electric circuit diagram here .. but not re-looked at that just yet ..

went out just now .. shopping .. opened 'n closed everything ..
unlocked 'n locked via the fob .. and interior switch ..
everything is fine .. no odd horn beeps ..

struck me that the hood/bonnet switch would be a serious contender ..
( as opening/closing that .. on the day .. has been consistent with miss-alarms )
i've a bug-deflector i keep meaning to fit .. so i'll do a thorough check then
meanwhile maybe i'll be a bit more forceful when closing the hood .. :)
perhaps some wd40 or similar on the hood switch might be beneficial as well
