Hello

I'm in the process of changing the coolant Thermostat on my '02 Freelander V6 because it's defective.....I'm also changing the intake manifold gasket with a new one.

I noticed the previous owner had already replaced the front Intake Manifold gasket (cyls 1, 3, 5) and applied sealant to the gasket. The FL manual does not specify any sealant during installation...Is the sealant needed to provide a tight seal between the surfaces or I don't needed at all??

Another question is what can I use to take off the old gasket and clean and prep the manifold surface for reinstallation??

Any recommendations will be very helpful.....Thanks for your time.

Did you actually READ my questions regarding the gasket replacement??

I'm installing a Brand NEW gasket for the intake manifold....I did not need you to tell me that. I was not planning on reusing the old gasket.

A simple 'thanks, but...' tae the poor bloke would've done:rolleyes:

Don't suppose ye've got a manual then? That would tell ye if ye needed to use the sealant or not. Some motors do and some don't, look it up;)

remember that vid where J Clarkson took a Gunship over the Nevada desert and shot up a motor - maybe Goyal cud do tha with his Hippoo?

I do have the RAVE manual and I DO know how to read AND follow instruction fine, thank you!

But I guess it's a crime to ask simple questions and clarification in this forum....

more than 12 replies so far and none of them related to my original questions...But for most of you it's easy and fun to flame someone from across the pond for speaking up!

That's okay, I guess I picked the wrong forum to post my questions - my fault and my apologies for having upset some of you so much...Thanks so much for your help!

Unfortunately the sort of banter, there is a more suitable name, that you experienced does tend to put newcomers off. This, IMHO, is to the detriment of the site.

CHILL BILL! :cool: Marty1a gave a genuine answer

Looking at the pic, the face of the manifold is stained with coolant past the gasket mark (blue line). The previous owner might have used additional sealant for a reason, check its not warped or pitted

The gasket on the 1.8 is pre-formed silicone, I would think the V6 is the same stuff.

Any RTV silicone compound capable of withstanding 200 oC is good

I agree Jon, but he did ask for it with that tone of reply to Marty1a.

I would expect that sort of lash out at the tratter boys who dished out the banter.
 
FFS 18 Posts and no mention of Gasoline and a Zippo (He is a merkin.) I don't know, I go away for the weekend and the place falls apart. Still normal service is now resumed.

THANK YOU for your good explanation and prompt response.

I did manage to clean the old gasket material off the manifold and there is no pitting or warpage of the surface....in the original photo the #5 cyl was misfiring and maybe that's part of the problem of coolant showing on the old gasket....

I will reinstall the new one with some RTV sealant just to be on the safe side.
