so a few months back I had the injectors on my TD6 tested in the quest to diagnose a vibration I'm having. They came back as OK and not in need of a refurb
Well since then I've been getting smoke and lumpy running mainly when cold.
So injectors have been suggested again as a possible cause.
Had a mechanic do a leak off test to see if there is an obvious fault. The results are as follows
Cylinder 1 32ml
Cylinder 2 48ml
Cylinder 3 38 ml
Cylinder 4 54ml
Cylinder 5 60ml
Cylinder 6 38ml

So the mechanic has recommended having the injectors out again to test.
Does that sound right? Don't want the expense if its uneccessary but am wondering if the first test I had was done incorrectly or the results mis interpreted.
 
maybe an option, run some injector cleaner through. Double dose!! The leak off test can spell out a blocked injector as well as an under performing injector coil!
normally a blocked injector will make a cylinder "clack" along with a misfire.
also try engine flushing and an oil change
to help eliminate sticking piston rings. Have you compression tested the engine both hot and cold to compare and differences. Good luck buddy!;)
 
Funny you should say about the clacking. I put that down to a hydrolic lifter but it's not as pronounced and tinny as lifers that I've heard fail in the past.
I've run a couple of injector treatments at high dose and that did nothing.
Also did a recent oil change
Haven't done a compression test though. Maybe I'll have the injectors tested and do a compression test.
Having said that. With such different results from the injectors does that show they all(or most) have issues?
 
from experience in diesel cars in general from around the 2002 mark, the injectors in the modern engines work much harder than previous more mechanical units. Also under more stress.. As you know they're not made as durable as they used to be!! Ive had two cars both around 60.000mls had weak,worn and failed injectors. From internal leaks to failed coils and blockages.. The last car for repair was only 5 years old! Have you any engine light or error codes?
 
were all the injectors replaced into their original positions? Some injectors have to be coded due to manufacturing tolerance differences, they are coded into the ecu to make the small differences ironed out. But nothing that could cause rough running. Dirty maf, air intake sensors can cause running issues also engine coolant temperature sensors.. Do you know anybody who has a nanocom diagnostic who can read the live data given while the engine is running, hot or cold...a lot to take in I know.
 
I've read that these don't need coding.
Don't know anyone with nanocom
I've got the icarsoft code reader but can't remember if it does live data.
Are you thinking the different readings on the injectors don't warrant getting them tested?
 
not at all, just trying to find any obvious signs before you go spending money on something you've previously done with the risk of no real result. Sometimes simple physical observations can find the answer before money does. For example, damp connections, weeping coolant sensors, dirty or corroded contacts all play there part in rough and irregular behaviour on start up and running.
 
Yeah fair comment, there's nothing obvious but I will check. It is high mileage 230,000 miles. But was previously fairly well looked after and ran ok. Although it has had previous injector issues that were supposedly rectified but none of the injectors look new or refurbished
 
ok, here's a thought. Try putting a plea for assistance on the regional landyzoners for another bus driver close to you who has a nanocom who can come to your assistance and help spot anything unusual for a few beer tokens. It could be an answer to your problem if not a nice meeting with a fellow bus driver. That won't cost you!

I dont think there is a nanacom for the model you have but there is a faultmate . the other option is Story Wilson's allcoms but i dont know if it reads diesel faults
 
So today I spoke to a diesel specialist in Birmingham who is pretty confident I have an issue with the injectors. He's offered to test the injectors and if I need to have any refurbished I won't have to pay for the testing. Seems like a fair deal so I decided to have a crack at getting them out.
I also needed the glow plugs out as I knew I had issues there as well
So. I started early fully expecting to have a fight on my hands
I started with the glow plugs and with plenty of wd40 and some gentle back and forth with the ratchet I got them all out with no dramas. Tested them all on the bench and all were faulty.
Now the injectors.
Amazingly 5 can't out with relative ease. They were all tight but with a lot of jiggling they came out. The 6th wasn't so easy but after about an hour it did give in and came out. Happy days. Now off to Birmingham on Tuesday to see what faults if any they can see
 
Well, not great. This is why I hate taking anything mechanical anywhere I don't know and trust.
All 6 injectors were condemned as faulty.
So I thought ok well I'll live with them for a while and get them sorted.
Went to a LR specialist to get new coooer seals to re install the injectors.
Spoke to a technician there and explained the story to him and he said he would be amazed if all 6 were faulty in a car that started well and ran ok.
So now I'm thinking was I told they were all faulty so I could be sold recon injectors. The tech also said the report I had was very basic and not a very good test for common rail injectors.
Not sure on my next step to be honest.
 
oh dear, I understand your doubt. That's a good question. Other than a second opinion but at cost to your self.. Did the report say electronic or mechanical problems. It is a bit vague just to say they're buggered with out any real explanation....
