Well, the bonet is cable tied down for the night. I got it open and the mech out without breaking anything that wasn't already broken. I haven taken that cover off the bottom of the mech yet, the one that's riveted on. What's the best way of getting this off? I read that a hammer and chisel is ok, so is a drill.
So now to source a spare part in the morning and fit it. Should I change the whole locking mech or just the cable?

lube the mechanism, it should just be the cable that rusted, frayed and snapped. I couldn't get a drill in there, very easy to knock th erivets off with a hammer and chisel.

wouldnt bother with the lock mech or the cable....fit a beckly amd padlock with a load coach bolts......

has anyone suggested you burn it...........

if you need a new mechanism i've got an old one lying around somewhere

Thanks mate, and thanks for the advice about lubeing and checking the mech. I will see if our local discount motor spares shop can get a cable and mech.
Does the bottom cover that's riveted on need to be off to fit the new cable?

yes. mine was made of plastic and i cracked it, so be careful.

Yeah i had a quick look and wasn't sure if it was plastic or just cheap metal. Cheers for the heads up mate. I will let you all know how I get on with it tomorrow.

you probably know already but don't just whip the old cable out, tie a piece of string to it first or you'll have a mare rerouting the new cable.

When I get the new cable, will it be the inner and outer? Or just the inner?
I only ask as I pulled the inner out earlier, I was so ****ed off and didnt think about it.

i got mine from a main dealer and came complete with outer and has the special attachments on the end.

Well, that was one of the worst jobs I have ever done! It took about 10mins to get it off the one in the scrappy and about 3hourd to fit it to mine!
