I think the plastic ring underneath the stearing wheel is broken because when i took the couling off some plastic pieces fell out. Am i right in thinking that i need to pull the center piece out of the steering wheel (the horn) and there will be a nut underneath to take the wheel off and can anyone tell me how to get the indicator stalk off please, ive taken the 2 gold screws out but couldn't see how it came off :D thanks for your help

I've got a 300tdi and I've just had my steering wheel on and off and the indicator stalk off.

The horn button can be got out by prising back the covering on the wheel and working your way down to pop up the horn button. the horn button is in 2 parts I thought it was really easy till I popped off just the top and still had to take out the rest of the horn button to get to the nut.

The nut unscrews and then the wheel comes off the splines it's worth marking the wheel to know where to put the wheel back correctly, may need some brute strength or a tool (something with legs is mentioned in the haynes).

To take off the indicator stalk undo 3 screws two on the unit itself and 1 in the horn contact. Then the unit can be eased out.

The plastic thingy that does the indicators is just underneath the wheel.

Hope this helps

I have a similar issue with my 300TDi. Sometimes the indicators turn off, mostly they dont.

I pulled the horn out in one go (prise the hard plastic bit up, then carefully insert a srewdriver under the side of it to pop the hole lot). If you leave the battery connected, it's best to insulate the connectors from the horn or you'll annoy the neighbours no end.

One big nut holding the wheel on but it should be very tight. Had to use an extension bar on my ratchet whilst holding the wheel.

As Teshu says, mark the wheel before taking it off the splines. The wheel will be stuck hard but with a bit of wobbling at the top and bottom, it should come free.

When I did this, I found that it wasn't the plastic ring on the column that had broken, it was the locators on the wheel. Didn't bother to look if you could dismantle the wheel or not and just put up with flicking the stalk off when I go around corners (if I bother to indicate - yes, I'm one of those!)

Hope you get the job done
