2008 Defender Puma. Serious problem getting key to turn, turns a few degrees then stops. Obviously knackered. Question is, is it simple to fit another of does it require a specialist?. I see they are for sale on ebay for about £50. Would very much appreciate some advice. I would rather have one delivered to my home and fit it here than risk getting stuck somewhere.

It'll have anti-tamper bolts I reckon. My 300Tdi did, but they were quite easy to get off :rolleyes:

Thanks, Just to add a bit more information. I have been out this afternoon and started the vehicle 3 times, on each occasion I turned the key repeatedly and eventually the key turned fully and engine started. Mike

Presumably, you've tried the spare key?
 
Just wondering if I could buy just the key barrel so do not have to replace whole unit? Mike
 
Have you wiggled the steering wheel from side to side while turning the key, steering lock may be on and interfering with it, wiggling the steering wheel usually allows the key to turn and takes steering lock off. If thats all it is it is normal, you may be holding on to the steering wheel as you get in or out activating the lock.

Thanks, yes the lock is often engaged and wheel needs a waggle to free it but this is not the case here. Mike
 
I am wondering if someone can confirm.......... If I can determine it is just the key barrel at fault and not the rest of the unit, are the key barrels replaceable and available. I guess this would be the easiest fix. Additionally I am wondering if the ignition key barrel is exchangeable for the door key barrel. Just in case!!!!. Mike

Looks like it LINKY (Sorry, I didn't add the hyperlink yesterday :oops:) Call Paddocks with your reg or VIN
Though it looks to be a similar price for a whole new unit.
The door key barrel and ignition key barrel are different.

Thanks, Managed to get it working today by squirting WD40 into key hole so suggests faulty or badly maintained barrel, crisis averted but do intend to fit new barrel/unit in due course. Mike
 
Instead of using WD40 in the future, give your barrels a squirt of penetrating oil, as WD is not an anti-sieze fluid, and the penetrating oil (especially if it contains graphite) will keep them free and well lubricated.
