Hi All

My 2000 Freelander 2.0l has a distinct "whirr" noise if you rev it and let the revs drop. I'm pretty sure it’s not the alternator bearing. Is there an idler roller that could have a noisy bearing, as it seems to be coming from that side of things?

If there is an idler roller there is it a direct replacement or does it affect cambelt tension? If it’s the latter then I may as well change the cambelt at the same time UI suppose?

Access wise I assume I can just remove the o/s/f wheel and the inner plastic panel and get to it from there?

its possible it could be a stretched or nackered belt, ears a ickle ming tip ta elp yer, mix up some washin up soap in er spray thingy ,run motor till ya hear noise, spray jist the belt, noise stops = change belt, if yer still got noise , spay wd40 wiv extension bit only on suspected idler , and agin noise stops =idler , if still there do the same ta alternator , remember if ya have air con you will have two belts, the compressor has a slip clutch and only engages when ac is switched on [ this clutch is a fave fer whine noise] . . .ta change the belt/belts ,yes yer have ta take wheel orft and plastic cowel [jack motor up] be safe ,its er pig of a job if ya decide ta diy it let me know as i have a few tips ta elp yer. . . . .and best oh luck. . . .
