Well they do say that in the country of the blind the one-eyed man is king!Sorry I must have misunderstood when you question the motherboard relays as a possible issue.
So if you powered it up and it clicks on/off, is it the relay that clicks ? if so then the relay works??? but something is not holding it in.
I have basic electronics knowledge. Usually learn by blowing fings up.

My problem is that we leave these things on when we aren't here to stop the pipes freezing up, basically, and clothes etc going mouldy, and paint etc in tins going off. So I cannot risk anything blowing up!
It could well be the relay that clicks, it is a bit awkward powering it up with the little board available to view. I'd have to put up pics to show how the housing comes apart, but yes, I think, with a couple of extension wires and some choc-blocks, I could get to the point of being able to verify that. And why a dodgy capapcitor would stop the relay holding itself in I have no idea.
I have to go out and do some shopping as W is unwell again and she never goes out on her own now, but once back I may put some pics up so peeps understand.
But yes there is a relay inside the stat. Presumably driven by a low power signal from the actual temp sensor. There is no bimetallic element in it, oh no, that would be too unsophistcated!!!
