Hi All,

I sold our trusted 1997 range rover over the weekend to by a 1998 se. Its a lovley car but its all of a sudden developed a gear box fault that has got me MIFFED!

There are no warning lights or messages but it wont select the right gear. For example, if i put it into D it selects 3rd, but the red light indicator next to the knob says 1st.
if i put it into 3rd it selects 2nd. but the red light still says 1st.
1st gear cant be found! and it wont select lowrange although N is ok. park and reverse are not affected in anyway.

Please please does anyone have any ideas as my perfect car is now starting to cause me big problems with her in doors!

Thanks Drew

Thanks for getting back to me.

Ive found a copy of rave and a workshop manual.

As for the switch, not as yet. Im gogind to have another go this afternoone while its still light.
will let you know how i get on

I thinks we may have the problem now.

We unpluged the gear positioning switch and tested the voltages, nothing in 1,2,3, drive and reverse are both ok as is r.

I called a couple of places today and they have said its a main stealer part only! guess what £189.00 +VAT.

i dont suppose anyone knows where i could get a second hand one? ive tried ebay but no joy, and its a little much to be spending if its not going to sort the problem.

thanks agaian

WE HAVE SORTED IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I managed to get a second hand one from a breakers in chesterfield. They are currently breaking a 1995 4.6 HSE and sold me a gear positioning swithch for £70.00. we fitted it this evening and bobs your uncle it works.
all we need to do is just mahe some fine adjustments as its struggling with N and we should be back on the road.

thanks for the help
Drew

cool :D glad you got it sorted, just to confirm though, you call it the gear positioning switch, are you meaning the transmission seletor switch as shown in the linked article?? :)

either way, glad you got it sorted!
