This will probably come across as a stupid question but here goes - how can I tell if I'm still in diff lock and if so how the hell do I get the damn thing out? After my front diff went I had to stick it in lock to drive it, as you do. However moving the lever to take it out of lock does absolutely nothing and even when I still had the front prop off I could move the lever either way and it would still drive. It let's me change to hi and low ratio fine but it seems, to me anyway, to be stuck in lock. I can even move the lever left and right when I'm driving and it does nothing. Any ideas please? Got a new diff and front prop back on so the sooner I can ascertain whether its still in lock or not the better

could be simple things like the linkage needs adjusting between the transfer box and Stick

They do seize up with a lack of use and stick in diff lock a bit of abuse with the shifter may sort it sort it or if you remove the middle panel / look under you may be able to get a pair of mole grips on the lever to do it on the transfer box If I remember its a twist of about 90 degrees to disengage it if this work then it is just the linkage needs adjusting

to test fit both props & axle diffs leave in gear jack up a wheel if your still in diff lock it wont spin round if it is unlocked you can spin the wheel easily

Well that won't do anything as it will still drive  nugget. That's the problem

No it wont :p

If diff lock is still engaged then it will drive, if not it wont! So if its in diff lock and locked then you're fine and if its in diff lock but still driving then its stuck in diff lock int it you cock womble :D

Yes but it has been driving without the front prop on regardless of what the lever says. So for all I know, even after I've refitted the diff and prop its still in diff lock.

Will jack it up with vehicle in gear and see if one wheel turns independently. Ta muchly.

And disco I was actually considering it lol it works out cheaper and easier than driving. But I'm not a morning person and buses run to timetables :rolleyes:

Rich I did what you said and it didn't show anything but of course it wouldn't . The diff lock locks the centre diff so even with one wheel up and in gear it still has some amount of rotational play backwards and forwards. I tried that with the lever in and out of lock and it made no difference as both wheels will still turn the prop to a certain extent.
Is there any other way to tell?

once you've taken up the slack it should stop spinning if its in lock

if it doesn't stop diff lock is out / disengaged

The front wheels don't freewheel on a defender. They will always turn the prop as its not the axle diff that's locked but the centre differential in the transfer box. If I jacked up both front wheels and turned one then the other would turn in the opposite direction, they don't turn independently

spanner on diff lock spigot nut (13mm)anti clockwise ,then adjust linkage or check switch isnt wound in too far,by jacking one front wheel up and seeing if you can spin it freely

Where is the spigot nut? I've never had to touch the linkage so its all new to me. A diagram would be much appreciated too :)

I found it easily enough and linkage is moving freely. With one wheel jacked up I'm not getting it spinning fully around at all, once play in the halfshafts, diff, prop, and transfer box is taken up it won't rotate any further. And this is the same with both transfer box and gearbox in neutral too . However if I were to put transfer box in neutral and start to reverse I can move the lever into normal unlocked position and it clunks so something is moving in there but I'm not sure what. Is it possible that its wound up to buggery thus not letting me take it out of lock, even though linkage is free?

linkage might be free but not moving spigot enough thats why you use a spanner to turn in anticlockwise to disengage diff lock ,wheel will spin if gear box is in neutral and diff disengaged

Used the spanner and turned both clockwise and anticlockwise. Any further anticlockwise and the nut started to loosen :s wheel still wouldn't turn freely
