Just been out to the garage:

All my wheel nuts are LR originals and are 27mm
The fixing bolts for the spare are LR originals and are 27mm
The box spanner is actually a wheel brace ( i never use it) and it is original LR and is 27mm

Yep I have the one with the locking collar. Sorry meant to say bolts holding it on. It`s an issue because my landy didn`t come with anything to get it off, and it is compleltly illogical to have to use two tools for two different sizes when one size would have worked. Guessing the civilian defenders use one size as is sensible!

That makes sense now, someone has clearly used a different size bolt/nut to hold the spare on. Will this have ruined the thread if its supposed to be 27mm? The wheel brace I bought is 27mm

No mine is ex-mod and came with all the bolts matching and with the proper LR 27mm wheel brace.

is what is more likely is that some previous owner to you has changed the wheel nuts or the spare wheel bolts for some reason and not fitted the correct ones on. I would DEFINITELY change the wheel nuts from 25mm to 27mm as they are a pretty safety critical part imo and the more metal holding your wheels on the better. Especially if you have wolf wheels and short studs.

and no thread prob not ruined, but take some off and show us some photos, maybe some one near you can pop over and try the nuts swapped around etc to work that out.

I am down in bristol this weekend and COULD take the landy but its a ####ing long drive in a 2,5na with no roof so probably not, but i could briong one of each bolt/nut for you to test but you would have to get to bishop sutton

Just triple checked and they are definitely two different sizes, why would the army have fitted a different size to hold the spare on? If I bought two 27mm bolts it should be easy to replace the ones on the spare wouldn`t it?

they wouldnt as that would be a right pain in the arse and could potentially affect a soldier if they cant get mobile again quickly. They are fitted with 27mm wheel nuts and 27mm spare wheel holder bolts.

Did you get yours DIRECT from the army or had it been registered before you got it or was it a private purchase? Direct from the army would mean you brought it from someone like withams/blanchards etc.

So couple of possible scenarios:
1. it was cast from the army sometime ago and a previous civilian owner to you has mucked about with the bolts

2. the vendor mucked about with the bolts to fit the spare using what they had lying around as the army took them off (probably to keep a decent unused spare and as the vehicle was being cast didnt bother screwing the bolts back in)

3. the army fitted the bolts as the originals were perhaps robbed for a different truck, and as they knew this one was being cast jsut did what they could to get it out the workshop and away as they dont give a #### what happens to them after that.

You can buy the genuine bolts for the bonnet carrier to save mucking about with washers etc

Sorry my fault for confusing you!! the wheel nuts are correct at 27mm (if this is standard) . I will order two 27mm bolts to replace the ones on the bonnet :) and try and use pliers to get the other size off, doesn`t matter if I mushroom them as they are being replaced. Hopefully this is the problem solved...

just use what ever size socket they are, or an adjustable wrench, they probably have a long thread and if you bugger the head you risk them getting stuck and then they will need drilling and cutting off. which would be a ball ache as they are quite recessed.

Just go to halfords, measure the bolt head, get same size socket and try it, if it doesnt fit then they will let you try another one.

Or use a PROPER adjustable spanner, NOT a pipe wrench or stilson etc as you will burger the heads and then good luck getting them off.

patience young one!! lol

Yes 27mm is standard wheel nut size on a landy

Where di you get your landy?

Thank you yoda ;) could I use normal two M27bolts? or do they have to be genuine (the MRC4473 link you posted). I will go to Halfords and buy the right size socket then. I was very naive-knew nothing about landies, and believed the guy I bought it off when I asked him"Does everything work?" he replied "yeah course it does mate". Ebay job, big mistake!

A couple of different sized nuts (oo-err) will be the least of your worries in time to come. Good luck with it all![emoji1]

you could use 27mm bolts, i dont know what the thread pitch is though for the threaded part. you could try it. get 8.8 rated ones so you know they are strong, not cheap crap that will strip or get broken with the movement and vibrations.

Yopu may be able to get them cheaper than that, shop around, that was the first link i found, search by part number.

So far it`s had (in less than a year): 3 new locks, 3 new door seals, recon discovery 200tdi engine, front and rear acoustic matting, new rear door, anti theft stuff, pioneering tools and mounts, towing pintle, full service, jack, loads of painting, gearbox oil-nowonder I`m always broke haha!

Welcome to landrover ownership lol :D

Mine are definitely all the same and correct. Sounds about right for a landy, if it's not leaking its ran out!

Yeah, mine are all 27mm including the bonnet. One of my first Landy purchases was a 27mm [socket] from of all places B&Q, turns out they are actually a good source of cheap sockets! I keep it in my Landy along with a breaker bar.
