The Wife's Freelander TD4 clunks when she changes gear. Having read a few articles on here it seems the rear diff is most likely the culprit.

What I want to understand is whether there is a test I can do so as to be sure that is the problem and it is not something else?

Lie under car, grab nose of diff and push it up and down, it should move a small amount, excessive movement and diff mount is ripped. If you look at the mount you can also usually see the tear
 
No, just a bit of a Chinese puzzle sliding the new one back in, the old one popes out then you cant understand for the life of you how the new ones slides back in ;)
