Morning,

On the way home last night the Gear change was feeling dry, I cant remember when the oil was last changed/topped up in the gear box and I'm aware that many dont bother with it,


So, how do i change the oi in the gear box,

Vehicle in question is a 97' 300TDi Defender 90,

I did look on the how to area, but I couldnt find anything on it,

Remove centre panel, fill plug is on the side of the box nearest the driver, take this out first...its a torx bit (T55???)
drain plug on the GEARBOX is at an angle, so be aware when you take it out, the oil will come out at an angle, I got covered the first time I did mine ATF is not nice...

refill with atf till it dribbles out the fill hole.

doneded...

Transfer box is a fiddle, the fill plug is in an awkward place, TB takes EP90, same as diffs/swivels (swivels may be grease filled)

i found TB and GB easier to fill from inside with a piece of hose and a funnel via the centre access panel. Its fiddly as hell from underneath and results in copious oil down arms etc

Some fill from inside (middle seat and cover removed) using a funnel and pipe

Some use a 5 litre garden sprayer (ATF or MTF is quite thin)

Some use an oil syringe (me included)

Most get oil running up their arms

+1 for the oil syringe, it takes a few goes to fill up the gearbox but makes it a little less messy

yeah the hose and funnel method is quite messy if the end of the hose has come out the filler hole and you havent realised lol

Errm 1ltr oil bottle with integral pouring spout. Fill up. Put spout in filler hole squeeze bottle. Repeat till oil runs out of filler and down ya arms..

Oh pretty sure torx is T60.

Another take on the funnel and hose method, with this one the excess goes on the floor instead of up your sleeve.

Why didn't I think of any of these! I just did mine with the 1l bottle with a integral spout and squeze. Kept filling it back up from the 5l can of EP90.

Yea, it worked but I learnt I don't like the sensation of it dribbling up my arm.... I also managed to overflow the oil pan when I dropped the rear diff oil Luckily the Mrs hasn't spotted it on our drive yet!

The hose-pipe from above idea looks quite handy.
