the best way is to remove springs and feel valves sliding in guides,piston top cotact mark will give you good idea

oh well, never done one on a disco before...:D
 
if heads on just turn engine over and watch for sticking jerky valve movement ,if smooth thet should be fine

I ended up "making" the socket to undo the crankshaft bolt today?
not a 3/4 drive, 30mm one, but an old imperial 1/2 drive one (1 inch & 3/16ths I think), but welded it to an old ratchet with no insides. but it then left room for a T bar also. to stop the socket bursting i welded a length of gas pipe over the socket.
it looks awful but worked a treat.
still not got the cam belt cover of yet, all unbolted, but its stuck on the one corroded bolt, so left it soaking in wd stuff overnight.?
I have aready marked out the 4 bolt holding tool thats needed "when" I rebuild, being made out of 1/4 inch metal checker plate I had.
being retired, I have plenty of time, but not the money I had when I worked - catch 22 situation eh...lol
