When turning a 200 TDI over by hand with the glowplugs removed?

I've just changed the cambelt and I feel like I'm encountering a lot of resistance. I can still turn it over but it takes a lot of effort.

I locked off the fuel pump and crank in the slot before changing the belt. Did a couple of rotations and everything still lines up.

Only one way to find out...

How longs it not been started for?

I can't start it, it's on my garage floor. That's why I'm keen to sort out any problems now before it's in my Landy.

The guy I bought it off took it out of a discovery a couple of years ago and was keeping it as a spare in his workshop, but he's moving so clearing workshop.

Whip the rocker box cover off and look

What am I looking for? Obviously the valves will go up and down, but what would I see if I was a tooth or two out on the timing, or would the crank simply not go around at all if that was the case?

not a lot if its out enough to catch the valves you will know by turning it ,plus if marks all line up it cant be wrong ,it will be a fair pull on a 1/2 inch ratchet to turn over btdc

That the valves are opening and closing correctly and nothing is damaged or bent pushrod/stuck valve.

I don't disagree- but the OP said glow plugs removed

also it may be worth dose of easing spray/diesel down bores before trying to start it and when fitted to vehicle spin it over with glow plugs out.

Were glow plugs rusty?

I am probably worrying about nothing.

By the by, from what I've seen so far it seems a well looked after unit. Oil is clean (in diesel terms) with no burnt smell. Nothing untoward on the oil filler cap. Timing chest was clean, just some belt fluff. The openings had been sealed prior to storage.

Crank dustcover had been RTV'd in - wish I had left the bugger well alone. Most boring hour plus of my life trying to remove every last trace of it.

Yeah, I think it is the pump. I think I was worrying over nothing. I'm like an expectant farther with my new engine!

All the valves are bobbing up and down nicely. Noticed the fuel pipe openings are bubbling when I'm encountering the most resistance. Also, I was using a sliding T bar to turn it over, it's much easier with a ratchet as I'm in a more comfortable position and can continuously adjust to the optimum position to get a little leverage.
