Interesting, i was wondering whether the reverse issue i have is linked to the clunking as we haven't really nailed it down just yet, plenty of maybes or collection of offending items.

I just replaced the front axle casing, diff, most suspension bushes and checked the others, checked the front & rear half shafts for wear ( seem to be oki ), UJ's fine and i'm still thinking it's a xfer box/gearbox issue as i have the problem when reversing...

For the clunking see post #5. If not then I would suspect a worn or oil contaminated clutch.

And I wouldn't do anything suggested by post #13

If I stick the hand brake on, then stick it in gear and let the clutch out quite sharply (without stalling), then the front prop turns, then it clunks. I can then stick it in reverse to get the clunk again, so it's definitely down to slack in the front axle somewhere on mine.

or worn thrust washers/shaft in center diff as well

It's the ring gear to pinion gear they are not meshing together properly, the pinion needs to engage the ring gear better. And the only way(sorry to say) is pull your diff and lossen the pinion add about 10 or 15 thousandth shim washer reinstall the diff and check for back lash may have to do it a few times until it is right. Things do wear and shim washer wear also. Change the inneer bearing and race also.

What is happening is the gears are riding on there edges and that is how you tear up a diff. they are made to engage in forward motion they get tighter, in revese they push apart and that is where peeps think the reverse in the trans is bad when it pops out of gear

Took my end caps off today, and turned the prop while looking at the half shaft splines. it's definitely play there that causes my prop slack. The half shafts turn, the flanges don't, until they clunk. better get some more ordered!

Well, flanges have been replaced but the half shafts still rotate inside them, so it looks like I need new shafts too. My clunking is slightly better now so I'm on the right track. Also, with the flanges off, I can rotate the shaft and it doesn't feel like there is any play at the other end of the shaft. My rear flanges are fine by the looks of it, but my rear most uj definitely needs replacing. Would love to get rid of this clunking !
