Still fixing it!
Hi all, how much play is excessive in my steering?
I have just under 1/4 of a turn in my steering wheel before wheels actually turn. I tried adjusting the box ( grub screw with 17mm locking nut) after a search on here, but although play disappeared my steering was so heavy it would auto straighten after bend! I backed the grub off a bit but steering is like custard again!! Any ideas you clever clever peeps?
Also I changed oil filter today and old one was covered in oil!!!!

Check the two UJ's on the steering column ... one of mine had play in, swapped it and hey presto, steering was a massive improvement!
 
quarter turn is too much!
max 3" either side of centre, measured at rim of steering wheel is MOT standard.
check column UJs and ball joints before condemning steering box.
 
Don't adjust steering box without identifying it as the culprit! check ujs in steering column, ball joints, tyre pressure etc. if you think steering box, then turn the steering column and see how much you can turn it before the drop arm turns. you do say the play disappeared when you adjusted the box. To take a quarter turn of play out, you must have seriously adjusted it, so take it easy on the adjustment or you'll completely knacker the box.
 
if adjust pas box make sure its first central count lock to lock and find center ,wind in 6mm grub screw while rocking input shaft by hand just till any free play has gone
 
Thing is, there is more wear on the centre, so removing all play there could still make it too tight across the lock to lock :(
 
Nb. I think. just thought I'd add that :) I must admit that I seem to have loads more play in my box when turning to the left, and it's tight when turning right, so I've still got a load of slack in the middle :( oh well. 200tdi + pas soon! :)
 
Hi lads, had a good play wid steering today- all good, track rod etc
The only thing I found movement in was lower uj on steering, I couldn't twist it but it had a little side to side play- am I right in thinking there should be no play atall?
I adjusted box by method advised on page 1 and now I have about inch and half play either way on steering wheel!

Hi Chris, that's the same UJ that was faulty on mine ... any play at all in a UJ and it needs replacing. Quite a simple job, took me about an hour. :)
