i thought this might be of use to someone. I decided to wash out the heater matrix as the car has been blowing warm air since the day I got it. I located the two hoses going into the bulk head and decided to take the hose of to the passengers side. The hose to the drivers side was too difficult so I traced it to an easier joint in the middle of the engine bay to the left of the engine cover.
The hose were super attached on so I used hot water to soften them and a pick to gently ease of the edges whilst applying a lubricant to allow the hoses to slide off. I found the one near the bulkhead really awkward so used the metal head of a plastic coat hanger to again ease the pipe off. Please note that the coat hanger had a ball end to it otherwise you may perforate the hose,
Hoses off, I washed out both ways using a garden hose and brown sludge stuff out until the water ran clear. I washed both pipes clear of oil and reinserted with clips back on. Refilled reservoir and bled. The car is much warmer now and bearable however not as warm as my 2.1 petrol jag.
I hope that has helped someone. I am looking into getting a solution to possibly dissolve more junk and build up from the matrix and then reflushing.
Hope that helps someone.

Brown sludge stuff and oil in the heater hoses and matrix is bad news, there's a flushing fluid that's perceive to clean cooling systems and therefore the heater circuit, but if the antifreeze solution mix is kept correct u won't have to do it again.

Just reading about holts version. I am going to run the car for a few days and see if the increased movement of water throught the matrix clears it further. I think a good wash out though is the way forward. Just a tad worried about creating a leak in a 14 year old system.

The leak will appear anyway - at least like this you have some control over it.

Dishwasher detergent can be used for cleaning
You leave it in the system for a few day or two
Only for oil and dirt, wont remove rust
For rust you need phosforic acid or cola, should also be left in the system a day or two
