I'm giving the radiator and intercooler a clean and hopefully the engine to. I've my 36mm cranked spanner in hand problem is when I move it anticlockwise the bit it's connected to also moves. What have I forgotten to do?:confused:

You just need to shock it a bit, to break the seal. Tell it a few lude jokes involving lesbians - sorry didn't mean to actually type that:eek::eek:

Give the cranked fan spanner a couple of good sharp taps with a lump hammer then spin it off.

I thought the viscous fan coupler was lefthand thread. So would you not have to shock it clockwise?

I may be totally wrong and if i am someone will tell me and i can blame it on still having 1 hell of a hangover lol
 
Only reason why i mentioned it, is that nearly all cars that i have worked on and i used to own a garage, so its quite a lot....had lefthand thread viscous couplers so they in effect self tighten as the engine is running.

Just done mine (TD5) when doin clutch in case it went through radiator when engine tilts. Defo anticlockwise and came easy with a sharp tap from the old trusty.

Ok, so there is a new 1 for me. I stand corrected. Td5 has a right hand thread viscous coupler. Thanks for that Meego

i think when the water pump pulley is ribbed where the belt runs it's left hand but if it's smooth its right hand, this maybe just newer land rovers though, so if any one can shed more light on this....
 
Me 2......I'd have been leaving it and fooking off to the pub...and making her in doors get bus to work 2moro.
 
I think after giving it a good leathering with various sizes of hammer & failing I would have resorted to the gas axe & stuff the consequences
 
Well, it's not going well at all. Tried knocking the 37mm spanner with a club hammer but it it keeps going round with the engine bit. Tried holding one of the four 10mm nuts/bolts
where the fan is screwed on to and using it as leverage but the bloody spanner fell through and I can't reach it now, ha ha. What's the best way of stopping the bloody fan moving so I can tap the 37mm nut free?

use a 36mm spanner not a 37mm.;)
 
I've just done mine on a D2 V8, the thread was a normal right hand thread.

I used a file across the small bolt heads to hold the pully still while I used the big spanner on the fan nut, it comes apart with a slip, as if the spanner had slipped. then I just spun the fan off. Hope this helps.

i know this is a little rough but you can also use a hard good screwdriver to shock it undone when hit with a hammer. i have done them just by using a spanner and they havn't been tight to come off at all, but you get some that are really tight and no chance of undoing them in the correct way.

I've done it myself with a blunt chisel.
 
Get a big driver across the nuts on one of the pulleys and hold it steady, then "shock" it with a good old bang on the spanner. Mine popped off easy then. :)
