I must say:
I've had my T-max 9500 winch nearly 5 years and it hasn't given me any problems until now. When it gets used its gets abused alright. It now needs a stripdown and an armature clean up as its been dunked fully submerged and under burried under sludge too many times to mention without any maintainance. I agree yes Warn have a superior name and reputation. I may buy a Warn or similar but then again I probably wouldn't I d get a beefed up comp winch if I'm spending that sort of money. I cannot complain about the T-max its done everything and more I ask of it including a dead 110 expedition vehicle at our local P&P site up over a vertical drop we call the cliff when some twot in a suzuki and a 90 blocked his exit going down. I like the Tmax as its a copy of the Warn and interbals are similar. Half the Problem comes with use of the winch the ammount of people that do not use snatch blocks or anchors. Most people on here will use them correctly but alot of people are complete ****s when it comes to using winches.
Take Last P&P a rangie failed a bombhole/cut away and climb out 2 motors 2 winches on its rear tow point at 45 degrees to the RR to pull its back end away from the bank both dragged their heaps of ****e towards the RR Classic. Then they decide to reverse with the winches attached. Needless to say I called them ****ers and walked off shaking my head. I talked to the RR driver and he told them to feck oft hooked the RR to the back of my 90 2 decent go's with a decent nylon rope he was out no damage to vehicle and his back wasn't jarred from impropper use of winches and strops. It never ceases to amaze me the ammount of IDIOTS that are "helping" and just being Twots.
Rant over, I like my T-max its pulled down 10 trees from my garden and done countless recoverys andso many other jobs without a decent service. After 5 years it does need a strip and clean but hey thats to be expected with any winch.

the first breakdown was my fault on my T-MAX it filled with water here is my disco being winched out after mine stopped due to water ingress (first use) i then sealed it

Propper use of the winch see how te Marshal is using a snatch block and a strop to extend the now short cable to mimimize load on his winch.

Alot of the time use of a winch is not really required in reality its takes too long and is a bit of bling to show off to mates. Most of the time I reckon 90% a rope and a decent person who you trust and whom trusts you is only needed. A winch is a great backup tho. I now refuse to use my winch at P&P unless I need it to get myself out of trouble too many idiots about and its to valuable to myself for when I need it. Its done alot of work but now I want to keep it for me when I am really in the ****e.
It got me out of a river bed last year when I broke a rear shaft trying to climb out of a reversed CCV section while trying to treasure hunt for signs at a localish comp. I tried to get my front end up a near vertical 3 foot step and up a 45 degree bank without hitting the tight trees. second slow attempt I got the front end up the step and the back didn't like it so 1 Britpart (****e) shaft later and the T-max on a snatch block from a tree I was able to continue back to the quarry entrance to strip and pull the shaft out to get me home. Man how I like Cranford Quarry Northampton!

Feck nows how I would have got out of there without a winch would have had to get the old military 12tonne Tirfor out but thats bloody heavy and hard going!

Where is that site? I fancy a go if nothing else. If they were winch training I hope they didnt use the sleeper with the rope over the corner of it and did the open their bonnets to stop any flying objects flying their way when the rope gets chaffed through saying that it is dyneema type stuff safer than wire rope i suppose. Seen too many accidents I get a bit OTT

seeings I have not winched before, I wonder how an earth a landrover can winch another that is on such a slope as that. Would the other landy not roll fwd, even a bit? Or are the brakes enough to keep it in situ?

As a last resort with a defender, you can loop rcovery straps over each side of your front bumper and then run your landy up them until they pull tight. You do risk damage to your front bumper but if it's a life or death situation then you aint gonna worry about that.
would that light hivis do much as a winch blanket either?

ok that makes sence, bit of digging and chocks away. I think im reading from this, you put straps on bumper, then you drive fwd onto them, thus pulling front of the landy into the ground, and thus chance of bending the bumper? Is that what ya ment Ratus ratus

the hi vis was to warn people it was there, is was a plas rope not a steel wire cable so when they snapped they just drop to the floor, other winch was encase the rope snapped to stopp the rangie dropping
to stop them moving forward, theres a couple things you can do,
the mentioned things and also a ground anchor attached to ya rear recovery point
or another 4x4
or like in the video theres a 10FT winching pole one behind blue 90 and one behingd the other LR (which is why its so far away)

Going back to your question on how to best to mount winch, I have just made a 6mm mounting plate and welded it between the front chassis rails, I made a new 75mm x 40mm box section and used it to replace the front crossmeber which I moved back towards the engine by 60mm, so my winch is mounted solidly down to the chassis. I did this after ripping my front bumper off at Kirton, the mounting holes in the bumper tore open leaving the bolts in the chassis rails! my bumper just has a slot in it now for the winch cable to come through.
