My 300tdi has got a really horrible metalicy rattling sound when decelerating. But it don't do it when accelerating or on tick over. But it also does it when decelerating in neutral as well any ideas?

Front, centre or rear?

My first thought is brake dust shields but knowing where the noise is coming from may help.

if it was doing it while idling I would definitely suggest cat or silencer baffles. might be worth checking anyway

Front half middle I think but it's hard to tell when driving

Check your breaks, mine started doing this the other night and after a quick look found the rear pads down to the metal.

Guess what I'm doing this weekend.

It's got all new brakes. After a better listen this morning it's more Like metallic ticking sound

Diff input bearings rattle on overrun and deceleration, give the props a good shake and rag about to see If there is any play on the flanges.

Have you looked at your transmission brake . I had a bracket come lose on my d2 . And it made a very similar sound

Not a heat shield rattling on the exhaust??

Also check the dust shield of the output flange on the transfer box.
Mine was rattling to buggery before it got replaced.
