Hi All

Well purchased this Land Rover Series 3 88" about three months ago, with intention of spending the weekend recommissioning and getting it ready for a pre-MOT.

But, I have since found out it need a good bit of welding, exhaust, doors, floors, brakes etc... .

So, I thought do I sell it or restore, well here goes restore (just hope it is not going to be a money pit).

Hopefully it should be in a road worthy state in about five weeks when I return to the UK, as I am cheating and getting someone else to do welding and recommissioning, ready for the MOT, then I will hopefully be able to continue as a rolling restoration.

are you all saying this bloke - whoever he is - is dodgy?

I have few questions that I hope you guys can answer.

1. What colour should the roof be on a Marine Blue Hard Top (Limestone or White) Factory Colour
2. Wheels should I stay with the orginal or go with something like this 160985804182 on ebay.
3. I have ordered three new doors, but I am also thinking of getting a tailgate, in case I want to remove the hardtop for summer.
◦ Advise on fitting, additional brackets etc..
◦ Suppliers or if anyone know where there is a good second hand one. Pref North East or if someone will post.
4. Mud Flaps
5. New exterior trim or second hand, suppliers please.
6. Is there any good parts manuals OEM that I can download.

No not saying dodgy, just saying I should have had it inspected, and not bought it unseen, I bought mine by just looking at photos on the internet, as I was away on business, so this was my fault and nobody elses (school boy error).

Anyone wanting a Land Rover should throughly inspect it before purchasing.

Mike, you can get manual downloaded from loads of places, just google it.
You can surely buy trim and stuff from Paddocks, Craddocks, Island 4x4 etc...
You don't need a tailgate as such if your just removing the hardtop for the summer. But all your shopping may end up underneath the van behind you if you boot it You can buy them on ebay but they are sought after complete in good nick. One near me in Swansea been on for ages at £30 with no chains or fittings battered to sh!t.
Wheels, I have the white 8 spokes which are a bit pre 9/11 these days. I quite like Weller wheels and the little red and blue lines but I'm painting mine black (due to major rust scabs all over them) cos it looks a bit more 'mean':cheer2:. I don't like the stock steel wheels but many people do I'm sure. Just a bit 'all creatures great and small' for me.
Roof, no idea. Only the S2s had a body coloured set of rear top panels and the s3 had same colour as the roof to save money in the factory apparently. I painted mine Land Rover Limestone because I got the paint for free.
The internet will answer all your queries if you google it all up. Good luck man

PS your website is boss! Looking at your engine pics, you may want to rebuild that Zenith carb and lap the mating surfaces as it will probably be full of cr@p and maybe warped. Have a think about electronic ignition too, it could be an attractive upgrade for you? I like it.

4. Seats (ordering new deluxe ones)
5. Welding and service getting done over the next few weeks, ready for me to collect 13th May.

Can't wait, need to remember where that gear are and what all the levers do, it has be years since I have drove a Land Rover, had a L200 automatic for the past 5 years, it did everything for you.

Most 2.25L engines were painted a light green at the factory.# The Alpine Green for Detroit Diesel is a very good match. the Detroit Diesel part number for the Paint is: 1#5194974 Gr.12.8001
2.5L petrol engines were painted red"

i've just been looking through your pictures and it looks to me like you have odd width rims (wider on the front axle), it could be because they're tidier painted but i'd be checking the sizes anyway

Well after considerable welding, new exhaust, petrol tank and doors etc, plus a good service (and emissions frigging), I have got the Landy through its test.

But, on first drive (15 miles) the gearbox lost 3rd and 4th, drove 2/10th of mile very slowly and lost 1st, 2nd and Reverse. So low loader from the AA was ordered, replacement gearbox installed.

Then, out for a 10mile drive, severe blue smoke from the exhaust, and a severe thirst for oil. Plugs out borascope job. Replacement Engine. Plus there is straight noise from the Rear Diff and Judder when in Reverse.

Starting to turn in to a money pit this one, so much for its description on ebay, sent a email to the seller to inform him but no answer.

So, now in this one with a considerable amount of money, my next step, spend spend spend - full respray (bronze green), softtop, powder coated limestone wheels. Fresh but original look body work with character not completely straight.

So hopefully from





To this, with the next 8 weeks





Plus got quite a bit done on my other projects (thanks to my neighbour for welding the chassis up, while my Mrs. had me cutting the grass.

Sorry for delay in replying, yes you are correct, one of the rear is off a LWB.

Just got set of five to powder coat and get some new rubber on.

Should have very nice, original looking Landy when finished (hardtop will be restore so I can fit when required).

Didn't want to change the colour, but if I bought another one (because i want a green one now instead of blue) my mrs would kill me.

Any info on how the aftermaket steering wheel fits on? I'm a little longer in the leg than most (6ft 5) and need a smaller wheel to get my knees in! There is literally no way in hell I can ever drive a 101 or a Super 7

I've found a nice one very much like yours and wondered how the fitment works, new boss or summat?? Ta.
