I have a '91 Defender 90 with 200 tdi. Just got it on the road. Very pleased with it but it is rather low geared. Can I fit Range Rover or Disco diffs? I dont need deep gears as it is for road use and gentle green laning.

you can but it wont alter gearing as there the same 3.54 you need to swap transfer box or high gears in it

thanks for quick reply.
Should I buy a transfer box from a Range Rover? or the transfer gears? I am not up to speed on permanent four wheel drive land rovers, my last one was a 11a about 25 yrs ago.

buy a disco transfer box ,rr use borg warner box which is same ratio and better box imo but would require an altered front prop

You want the LT230 transfer box from a Disco ideally. It has a different high ratio gearing.

That said, you might want to weigh up how much motorway use you will be doing.

If you are planning on fitting new tyres it might be worth considering different sizes as this will affect gearing too.
