:confused: Hi, I'v recently purchase a 93 Disco and trying to work out how hi low and diff lock work. Is it a H pattern and the right side are hi and low then the left side is diff lock hi low, when i change the lever it doesn't seem to make any changes except diff lock. Can some please explain how it works ?:confused:
 
Yes, left side diff lock on, right side diff lock off. You can select on the move.
Forward position is low range, rear position is high range. You must stop to change from low/high etc.
You should notice a significant difference in speed from high to low.
2nd low is slower than 1st high if you get my drift.

Should the Hi and Low work on the right hand side or only with diff lock on ?

both, the lever will be like a figure of eight without diagonal movements.
So high or low without difflock or high and low with difflock.
Neutral in the middle.
 
thanks Wah, Ok, there doesn't seem to be any changes when i move it into hi low or neutral, so is it broken ? the light on the dash comes on if i move it across to diff lock but it doesn't seem to do anything, what should i look for ?
 
No changes? As is your doing the same speed? In which case yes there is a problem, check your linkage, give it a spray of wd40 to free it up.

If its not your linkage then you got a problem :)

The diff lock won't do anything very noticable unless you're driving on slippery surfaces or you have wheels leaving the ground. It locks the front and back axles to turn at the same rate, so you do not want this engaged under normal driving conditions ie on the road.

High / low and neutral should be very obvious - High is normal driving, neutral you won't be able to drive anywhere and low you'll have a top speed in 5th of about 30 mph. There are no dash lights associated with high and low range.

who's gonna be the first ta point out that it only locks the propshafts And that the wheels can still spin or travel at different speeds on the axles.

Yes yes yes I'll be the first to admit a careless use of words but hopefully I can nip a yet-another-tedious-diff-lock-debate in the bud...
 
:confused: Thanks for everyones input, i have had a look and it seems all linkages are moving as they should. There doesn't seem to be any hi lo or Neutral. The only time it seems to do anything is if i move it over to diff lock, the light comes on and i can hear the change to lock but still no hi lo or neutral. when i move it from hi to low there is no pressure its like to easy to move between hi low and neutral, any ideas or suggestions ?
