Ur gonna hoist the landy up in the air and Leave it balanced on an hi-lift while ya crawl under it to stick an axle stand in position???

No problem with that, you only got to place it in position, no biggy really, just don't do it when lorries are going past!

Well I figure if it does fall then the wheel is still going to be on so it's won't crush me...

make sure you chock it, you won't stop it moving if it starts...

They're good for pulling out pajeros, if you don't want to get your Landy close to it.

other than that they're a menace.

Most land rover hand brakes are designed specially so that when you jack em up with a high lift they then roll off but stop when they touch down again! It's a recipe for disaster! Use a proper jack and stands its far safer. They have their uses but that's not it!

cheers, new trolley it is then!!

I made up some big wooden blocks for jacking up on from fence post sized timber with scaffold boards cut to screw them together width ways, there quite heavy, but dont move, dont sink in mud (much) and dont move on my gravel car parking spot if I use them there!.
my trolley jack lifts enough from the ground, but not when I`m up on 4 car ramps,
so the blocks then get slid under to jack up from.

I made the biggest big enough to safely let the jack move as I jack up,
as the jack moves as it changes its centre point as it raises, so, the jacks wheels roll foreward slightly & easily.
If I`m only jacking one end, without ramps, then the blocks get used to get wheels at almost ramp hight to sit on, dependant on the lift of the trolley jack.

Yes, I have the landie bottle jack, but rarelly use it,
as I`ve worked on cars & vans off & on for nigh on 50 years now,
so a trolley "jack"
("jacks" as I have 3)
is my favored choice of tooling for working with.

You really cannot be without one for maintainance issues eh :car:

Do you carry the trolley jack around with you for wheel changes? I might do that instead of my hi lift + axle stand.

:car:

no, I carry the landie bottle jack plus the wheel chock just for wheel changing.
its a doddle to do as you only need to jack the one corner up, its not fer maintainance.
point here though, I carry a small compressor plus 2 cans of tyre weld.
if the tyre weld dont work, then compressor but takes ages, if that fails then feck it, change the wheel.
my reasoning is,
If i get a flat tyre on a major road, I`d rather chuck some tyre weld in and run it far enough to get to a safe place to change it,
coz I`ve had "close" shaves with very close passing traffic in the past being stuck on the roadside on major roads.

I used to be a RAC patrol! Seen too many near misses so I agree with that theory completely!

Its a shocking reality that standing in a major road gets you killed

I`ve been toying with the Idea of carrying some compressed air in a modified empty small mig welding bottle
not as daft as it sounds, but if it works, it`ll be a quick way to put some air in a tyre in a hurry..

just waiting for me mig bottle to run out!

modify bottle top to take a decent ball valve, some airline and a tyre valve connector on the end.
It could be charged with air in reverse ?

I would have thought the little bottle would take 100 psi
(got to check first)
then it would woosh out enough to fill a landie tire - perhaps ?

Oh, if it did work, secure tightly in the rear of me disco eh..

just use an empty gas bottle

Seeing as both the RAC & the AA have a limited number of times you can call them out (5 IIRC) Id prefer to keep the call outs for when I really need them, like if I'm broken down & not bodgable, or an offside wheel change on the motorway.

Im in the process of doing this, was thinking of using one of my old AC gas bottles or possibly a little 3KG propane tank, my only concern was how much air I could get through a tyre valve (with valve removed)

Aldi or Lidl are doing 2tonne trolley jacks for £19.99 this week, I know that's not what you're asking but they could be alright for some.

Got one my self the other night, they where just putting them out when i got there, said it may not go threw the till yet as they where not ment to sell them till tomorrow, but went threw fine.

:D
thats the Idea James.

point tho`,
did not kwik fit do a tyre filling scheme once with Inert gas instead of air ?

nitrogen?
quite popular with track boys, it doesn't penetrate the tyre like air does (so doesn't loose pressure, except if theres a leak) , its dry, and doesn't expand as much when heated.
