hi guys, as some of you may recall i'm putting a bmw engine in my diesel p38, i'm just about to start the job and have been looking at the two engine bays, as iv'e got both motors side by side. Has anybody used the bmw radiator in the rangey?, looking at the amount of gear in front of the standard rad i'm beginning to think that a lot of my overheating problems have been caused by a lack of airflow through the air con condenser, the intercooler, the oil cooler, etc, im going to remove the condenser anyway as the air con compressor is seized and i think i can relocate the oil cooler out of the way, this will allow much better airflow to the radiator, as i will have a spare one from the bmw i might try using that instead of forking out for another range rover one. Iv'e been driving around in the bmw to test it under all conditions i.e, stop start traffic, short trips, long trips and even in excess of the speed limit(on a private road lol! in case big brother is reading this) and its behaved perfectly, but it hasn't got anything in front of the radiator to restrict the airflow, your thoughts on this would be much appreciated, thanks guys.:doh::doh:

you dont need to remove all the extras if they were your problem every p38 would be overheating. the cooling system on the p38 works fine but everything has to be perfect with it. the bmw diesel cooling system has the water flow going the opposite direction to most cooling systems the bmw takes the cooled water from the rad through the thermostat instead of from the engine throught the thermostat "i would love to know why" the stat must be constantly opening and closing. the conversion you are doing i did the same few yrs ago .i remember measuring the bmw rad i think it was wider but i could be wrong

thanks, did you use the bmw rad?, and any idea if i would be better off fitting a great big kenlowe instead of the usual viscous jobby? i need this to work as ive sunk to much hard earned cash into this beasty already, thanks for your help

The standard cooling system works fine if all is well. Don't waste your cash on a Kenlowe, expensive and apparently unreliable these days, I can give you a mod to use the aircon fans then you can bin the viscous fan.
I would leave the condensor in place too and fix the aircon.

data mod is great.
do the condenser and mod at the same time.
take the viscous fan off, i left the cowl off for ease of access..
enjoy

Hi Datatek, i would appreciate it if you could give me the mod for the fans, sounds like a step in the right direction, would they then be thermostatically controlled or are they wired via a dash mounted switch? thanks for your help.

PM me with an email address and I will send you the info.:)

i wouldnt change the rad the p38 rad is plenty good enough if the cooling system is ok. i have seen good reviews here about datatek,s idea of using the aircon fans.
