Okay folks I have found a Disco 2 for sale local to me. Sensible condition and price.
He has said that it has a bit of an issue coming from 3rd to second, apparently double clutching sorts it.
Is this going to turn out be a major issue?
My Discos have all been auto so I have no knowledge of this.

the r380 gearbox is known for it, often some better oil helps, but probably needs a re build, had mine done at ashcroft transmissions, cost around £450, fitted myself

I have found another one in Dover that sounds a lot better.
Any pointers for things to look at as I have always had 300tdi
 
Nothing wrong with autos......

Mine has done 160,000 with no problems (other than losing all its oil through the cooler pipe once).
 
Since I am forced to have auto for medical reasons, I have to "cope" with any issues they throw up - which, with the ZF boxes in the D1/D2, are pretty minimal with decent maintenance. One thing I would check on a D2 is the XYZ switch - which can fill with water, which it does not like, :rolleyes: and the switch itself is quite expensive ( ~£300) - repositioning AC drains can help - but a search on here will point you in the right direction for symptoms etc.

And, @neilly 's checklist is a fine thing to have, too:)
 
Cheers chaps. We have just bought a 52 plate. Rear chassis has been welded, recon engine, terafima all round, new which bumper and HD rear bumper. Few bits need doing to tidy it up. Oh and it's an auto!
 
i'm just bitter... my last D2 had a 2nd hand box put in which lasted 8 months. my 'new' D2, which i've had for 3 months has just had a replacement torque converter. my personal experience of autoboxes has not been great....

okay so I have looked at the 52 plate today. Loads of work done including re con engine. Up graded brakes. etc etc
ACE pipe needs replacing, bit tatty but will polish up, leaking sunroof and a couple of bits need replacing which he has supplied. Chassis has been welded.

The green one I made an offer yesterday but some one else beat me on the price, they have now offered it to me if I want it?

oh and the 52 plate was used for towing plant on a regular basis.
 
wouldnt have been my first choice in that its been used for towing plant and ace pipes are flaky, but you can only get whats around and for a price, id change gear box oil several times if its dirty once if its clean
