Hi guys, I've got an 03 td5 thats been playing up for a while. I asked on here a couple of months ago for help with loss of power. Anyway yesterday and this morning things took a turn for the worse.

Whilst driving the engine just cuts out. No coughing or spluttering. Just dies and rolls to a stop. You can turn it on again and let the pump do its thing then with a few pumps of the accelerator it finally turns over and drives fine for about 2 miles then dies again. I first thought maybe fuel starvation - mainly because the fuel pump has been making a right ol' racket for the last couple of months. But when the mech. took a look he was stumped. No faults on the reader and the pump still kicks in when you turn the ignition on.

Any advice would be greatly received:tea: any **** taking will be taken down and returned two fold on reply:D

What have you already tried? have you changed the diesel filter, what milage is on the vehicle, when does it cut out? under heavy load or high speed or just randomly?
 
I'd say it's either a blockage or a knackered pump, try a filter first as it's a lot cheaper than the pump, but my money is on your pump!
 
If u are certain that the fuel filter/housing is not clogged here are some tips:
1. Check the plug/wiring of the crankshaft position sensor
2. Go to mechanic and ask him to insert a pressure gauge after the FPR and follow the fuel pressure at idle and on higher revs. It must be constantly 4 bar... if it fluctuates check it before the FPR aswell, if there is good replace the FPR if not then it's the pump.
3. If the fuel pressure is good IMO u have to replace the injector seals/washers

By the way, do u know what kind of reader was used? ... cos a generic OBDII scanner which most mechanics are using will not show u anything on a Td5 whatsoever

Thanks for the replies.

Only been used round town this weekend, speeds upto 30. Cut out this morning 3 times over 5 miles between home and the garage. No load.

It was last serviced in May, it's on about 85,000 now. All filters changed then, not really started yet. Garage was backed up so he is gonna start tomorrow. I have searched the site and found a few posts about similar probs. Also searched about noisy pump.

Pump still runs when ign. is turned on. So am hoping noise is down to system needing purging.

Not sure what program the reader is. When you say they won't read discos. Is that as in nothing on the screen or just won't recognise the faults even if they were there. He has used it on mine and a disco 3.

Hi guys. Update time!!

New filters, New pump (£42.50 brand new aftermarket- dont ask:D). New FPR from LR £145:mad: and a new loom.

Now the f@@ked up bit. Started with a bit of gentle persuasion with new pump, old FPR and old loom. Won't start with new FPR. There is fuel coming through FPR although with pipe off it came through full of bubbles a couple of times. Haven't tried to turn it over again tonight waiting for the battery to recharge.

Would the trapped air stop the fuel getting to the injectors?
Any more ideas greatly received.

Also check your not sucking air in along the line....right back to the tank.
 
UPDATE NO.2:blabla:
My mech. managed to get hold of a friend of his who works for LR. Told him symptoms and he immediately said Injector seals letting in air - problem found:rolleyes:.

Then he said be very f##king careful:doh: Apparantly this is where I have to sit the kids down and tell 'em that santa ain't comin this year oh and yer birthdays are cancelled aswell.

Anyone had to do this before and is it as bad as he predicted.

do not panic it's a cheap and easy job ...just make sure first that it is the real problem.... put a gauge on fuel rail an clog return pipe from FPR to tank over night ...if it will keep pressure forget about injector seals for the time being
 
Had the same problem with engine cutting out. Mine was the copper washers knackered on the injectors. Replaced copper washers and o rings for all injectors total cost £12 and it only took about 2 hours for me to do. Do make sure that the seat for the injector is spotlessly clean prior to fitting the copper washer or the same will happen again.
 
Final update!!

Thanks for all the help guys. Problem was the injector seals after-all:doh:
But has had a few other new bits anyway. :D
