Just got into my xreg disco put the key into the ignition turned it all the lights came on coil light went out turned it to start and there was a klick from under the bonnet and it went dead any idears plz.

If electrics still work and it just clicks without cranking at all i'd say yes...hit it with a hammer.
 
If after turning key off and on again you have ignition lights then yes, sounds like low voltage at battery.....the click is the starter solenoid but not enough juice to kick starter into life. As said jump it or bump it and when running check voltage at the battery, should be 14volts+. If not, suspect alternator but it may be something silly like an internal light left on overnight? If the battery voltage drops when turned off suspect the battery.....any battery place will test it.

Hitting it with a hammer isn't likey to help but may make you fel better

When you say " goes dead " is that all the electrics or just the starter.

If its not all the electrics, just keep on turning the ignition on and off the " crank " position, and see if the starter eventually turns.
 
If the alarm has gone off you need to unlock it with the fob otherwise it'll be immobilised.
