Hi all

Looking to replace my head gasket, P gasket and valve steam seals on my discovery 1 300tdi just wondering if anyone can recommend a good place for replacement parts and what brand/make is good to go for?

Also can anyone point me in the right direction for a good video or picture guide of the steps in a head gasket change, done one before on a car but not a discovery so got a sort of idea what needs doing, but any tips etc would be helpful

Cool cheers is the 3 hole gasket the one to go for? Mine currently has this on it so I guess replace like for like?

unless you measure piston height and valves ,youd be best using 3 hole (errr5263g)composite would be my choice and dont forget to remove block drain on lhs first

Oh OK on the bits I have read and seen none mention this have to find exact location or a better guide to follow cheers for info

Cheers thanks for that, just need a decent guide or video now I think then order bits and have a go, just hope I don't go wrong

its quite a simple job on a tdi , just ensure you set tappets after, and for tightening head bolts you need a torque wrench suitable for 40nm and then for the 2x60 degrees you can use one bolt flat as a gauge if you mark the head so you know youve turned bolt exactly one flat ,likewise for the 10 bolts directly surrounding cylinders the extra 20 degrees can be gauged as a 1/3 of a flat

Cheers for the info, that's the inky bit I'm worried about is setting the tappet. Also setting the 60 degree after have a few torque wrenchs so setting torque is no problem, is there some type of gauge you can buy to set the degrees after if so anyone know what it would be called?

youd be better tightening bolts as i suggested rather than using an angle gauge, you need an 8 thou feeler gauge(0.2mm)set when cold using no9 method which is described in this link if you scroll down

Thanks for that gonna make a list of all the kit in morning I will need and get it ordered in. Thanks for all the advice

Any recommendations on a good compressor and pliers? I guess it will be easier to do this with head off the engine? Anyone got a guide for doing these?
