What I'm talking about are the gear/transfer box and axle oil changes.
I have been putting this of for......to be honest I daren't say, but too long, until yesterday/today :lol: 8)
I bought a new "tool" and it was all done sooooh easily I can't believe it.
See picture below. This is a hand operated pump, primarily for pumping heating oil from 25ltr containers into portable heaters.
As you can see it has a straight pipe that goes into the oil container and a flexy pipe to go........wherever !!!
I did the 2 axles yesterday after in about half an hour and the gear/transfer boxes this moring within one hour !!!!!
As you can tell I'm as chuft as a chuft thing on Chuff Day.
Oh, and the cost of this miracle of technology??? How about.....roll of drums please.......... 1.50€ Yes that's about a quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Am I a happy bunny or what

Nice, I use a massive syringe to do all my oils for axel/t-case etc. Its very handy, only takes about 500cc though, so filling the gearbox takes a few trips :D
 
Yeah yeah, all right Rob, don't rub it in.

I was on my back on the gravel this morning doing mine. Not exactly garage conditions!!
 
Make matters even better, they run synthetic diff and gear oils and they are compatible with the Disco AND as I'm using such a miniscule amount compared to an FH12, they don't even bother charging me for it! Result!

Ok ok, yes, marvellous lucky bastard and all the rest. Incidently, I've put in Difflocks own synthetic, just been for a drive and all is silence, well, as much as a 160,775 mile Disco Tdi 200 can be silent !!!:D ;)
 
I'm amazed the difference sythetic makes, to be honest if it didn't come out of the wall at work I wouldn't have tried it. Got a rear axle seal weeping at the moment, so it'll have another change when I do that.

I'm so pumped up about getting this work done without injury (scraped knuckles, blood etc) on the wifes Tdi 200 that I think I'll start on the Tdi 300 tommorrow !!!

Abit cheaper than difflocks. They also do them in 20L cans on request!

It sounds interesting for manaul gearboxes and transmissions but I'm not sure that it's suitable for autos, as they require more of a hydraulic fluid type of oil I believe.

To be honest I don't think I would risk putting something in my box (steady there in the ranks!!!) unless I was 100% sure it was the right stuff.

"XADO Atomic Synthetic Gearbox Transmission Oil 75W-90 GL 3/4/5 exceeds the requirements of the highest American (API GL 3/4/5, MIL) and European standards for gearbox and transmission oils and specifications of the car manufacturers (MAN, Volvo etc.) and transmission units (ZF)."

Arent the auto boxes ZF units?

If you look at the list at the top under transmissions, the bottom two are stated as auto box fluids.

And yeh thats why i'm asking first might email them

Sorry metallicachick, I didn't see that. ZF make gearboxes of all types though?

I will be interested in what you find out as I want to do this job soon and want to do the best I can (afford!:eek: )

I've just had another look and it speaks of "transmission units ZF", whereas in other parts it speaks of "gearbox and transmission units"

Also, it refers to EP 75-90, that surely is a viscosity that we would normally associate with manual gearboxes, transfer boxes, axles and swivels - not auto boxes.

Auto box fluid seems much thinner, I think?

That's manual gear oil, ATF (automatic transmission fluid) also has to withstand pressure to run a fluid flywheel / torque converter.

Dextron 3 is the norm now for ATF. Here's thier version Xado UK - ATF III Automatic Mineral Gearbox Oil | ATF III Transmission Oil | Mineral Transmission Oil | Automatic Multigrade Transmission Oils | Gearbox Oil Technology - ATF III Automatic Gearbox Oil

Thanks for that Rob, that's what I thought. I'd like to get fully synth if I can find someone local who sells it.

I live in the boondocks here in France - very pretty, loads of off-road stuff available but short on motor factors. Carrefour seems to be better than most other outlets.

I don't know to a sythetic ATF, someone here might. They always seem to be mineral based. We use Dextron 3 at work, and it pretty much seems to be the industry standard from what I've seen. Saying that, the only auto box we've producted is the Powertronic, and thats being fazed out in favour of I-shift so our useage is limited.
They don't even recommend changing it in a D2, stating it will last the life of the vehicle (I bloody doubt it!). I still did mine anyway.

Hi Rob, thanks again. From what I'm picking up Dexron2, 3, 4 or 5 are merely standards, with different oil suppliers providing versions to that std. Apparently Shell do a synthetic called Donax something but it's not available round my way.

We live a learn......................:)
