Before i kill someone wit a claw hammer tell me im doing something thick.

Cant get my 200tdi to turn over on the starter

Got 12v at the solenoid when keys in position 3

Got 12v at glow plugs when at position 2

And 0 at both when ignitions at 1

Ive put a direct earth jump lead on the starter

Ive tried direct 12 onto the solenoid- all i get is sparks.

Ive done the same on the bench with another starter i have which i have seen working eith my eyes.....nada nothing not even a click.

Id be happy if it even just clicked at this stage, i hope its me being thick and i dont have 2 ####ed starters.

if you have earther the starter and touch the small terminal with a live feed you should hear solenoid click if you touch the main battery lead terminal starter should spin using jump leads

The small terminal on starter is earthed to the block - the block is earthed back to the battery

Ive got the two brown spades (4 wires) and the main battery lead to the solenoid big terminal as per busters photo.

And i have a rather ropey looking thin spade - white and red iirc to the spade onnthe solenoid.

Turn the key , no noise but with the multi metre ive measured 12v at the solenoid.

I get no noise at all.

With the earth directly to the starter and putting the positive on the solenoid i get sparks - id have expected it to spin as you say.

I will try again tomorrow with the small spade with a known 12v.

there should be no earth on the starter except a mounting bolt or at rear end on case, white/ red is solenoid trigger at live at there should make solenoid click ,battery wire will have several brown live feeds for the car ,a live feed on the terminal; below it should spin starter

Ok i can get it to throw out with a direct 12 to the spade.

Will trace the red white wire back to source tomorrow and do a continuity check ,

Am i right in thinking that with 12 v at the brown/red terminal under ignition is a good thing and its probably just my red white not going live meaning that it doesnt throw - because it doesnt throw it doesnt make contact to send power to starter ?

that white/red wire should go back to a relay then ignition switch , as a temporary repair you can run a wire from the starter spade to the white/red on rear of switch

Probably should have printed this out today, makes much more sense now :)

the little wire that runs to the spade is a 12v feed which makes the starter plunge out. iirc you can bridge the + terminals and the 12v spade together to get it to start

Dear lord this wiring is a mess.

Its been spliced into with a very ****ty aftermarket immob..

Where does the earth from the starter relay go to - bulkhead above drivers footwell ? Slightly thicker black wire ? Cant get continuity through that but cam find no other black wires . Can turn over on key when i run another earth to the gearbox casing.

Im a step ahead of where i was last night:)

Also smurfed it while i waited. Whole things blue now :)

Badly spliced in that is....lots of insulating tape so im removing it ( it doesnt work) and tidying it up with solder as i go along:/

Hence why i, having issues :(

presumably through an immobiliser but you can fit one anywhere suitable

I asked for that didnt i :)

Ill run a new earth to the bulkhead.

Looks like ill need to run a new feed to the fuel solenoid also , as thts no where to be found , assuming i want WhIte wire with a hoop terminal (off a td )

Masking tape is not a good thing to use to write on to id wires as you take em off.....its all faded.....grrr

Is the black and green "start inhibit" wire the other end of the black earth from the starter relay ? I dont really want to go outside an attack it with the multi metre....see if it is i winnae be happy.

Who the #### senda wiring into a wrapped loom black and has it come out the other side as black with green trace ?

I ignored it as haynes Said it was start inhibit for automatic cars.....

Doesnt say on manuals to connect it to earth though.

So i found it.

Does the starter relay really earth at the rear of the car ? Its on a multi bullet that attaches to the rear loom.

All solved now. For the next installment of electrical retard , im having my mate park his new 110 at my door till i take heaps of photos and copy his wiring !
