Hi I would appreciate some advice from landy experts :)
I am exchanging my VW Golf for a 4x4 and looking at a 2003 Freelander ES 2Ltr, but I have been advised to stay clear from Freelanders. A local dealer has offered me a Honda CRV 2Ltr and begged me not to get a Freelander! Ideally I adore the Defender and would like one but budget rules at the moment.
If you have any advise it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

Hi Lisa,

Have you seen a freelander you want or are you just looking for general advice?

There are plenty of things to ask about when buying one and plenty goes wrong with them but any 11 year old car will have issues.

Freelanders are ok if you get a diesel dont get a petrol if you cant work on it yourself. pretty good trucks other than that. Good MPG and can easily cope off road. what would you be using it for?

hey lisa welcome to the forum .so whats the matter with freelanders ??? some people like them ,some do not ,I have 2 best advice I can give you is take someone who knows about them with you when you go to look ,where are you so if someone is near to you and free they could help you ,if the seller is genuine they wont mind

Hi Lisa

I wanted a Defender too, but budget didn't allow. Happy with my D2 though. :) Didn't want a FL because 1. Don't like them as much as the Disco and 2. I tow heavy weights with horses.

Each to their own though.

Good luck with your search.

If you go to see one ask them if the VCU has been changed and how many miles ago... And check for rust underneath!

I had the use of a F1 for a few months and in that time the VCU needed replacing (at around 80,000 miles) then the IRD failed then the rear diff blew so ended up being expensive and I'd never choose to get one...

On the other hand people obviously own them and really love them... Just make sure you give it a good check over and hopefully it wi have been looked after :)

Honda probably less trouble, but when it does go wrong it will be expensive.
Do you need a 4 x 4?

Wotcha ;)

Been running a 2002 Freelander TD4 ES for well over a year now, it needed a new clutch last Christmas but apart from that it's been no trouble at all.. it's going soon (I need a truck) but I'd happily have another.

Did look at a couple of CRV's recently for the missus but wasn't that impressed so she ended up with an X-trail.. so far it's been great and she loves it.

Plenty of Freelander info and buying advice on here so get stuck in.. :)

Good luck with the Xtrail, the one I had was a heap of crap, nothing but trouble:mad:

If you wish to avoid the potential trouble with the VCU/IRD/diff then simply remove the propshaft and accept 2wd.
You will then have a reliable truck and you could bolt the prop back on over the winter period if required.
And the Honda just says ' old, boring, Libdem voter'.
