Hi,
I have a 3.5 v8 in my 110 that is currently going through a complete nut and bolt restoration. Engine now in new chassis and local guy setup timing etc. Starts and sounds fine.

Idle fine.
Rev the engine and lots of blue smoke.

The engine was taken out in October last year and has been outside all winter (covered). It was smoking a bit when I got it but apparently the timing was out and the guy I got it from said the distrib was loose amongst other things. But not sure it smoked that much.
It is a carb model with a dirty great eldebrook on it (which I am told should come off at some point for off roading).

Is the smoke something that will clear in time due to it sitting around for so long?
Is something stuck? Been told to start get hot, let cool down and repeat a few times??
Should I take apart and could it be something accessable I can do? or
Sent it away?
Get a new one?
Any suggestions will be greatfully recvd.

Let it warm up thoroughly and see what happens, engines which have stood can be very smoky for a while.

what year is it? the early ones had ****e valve stem oil seals. also what oil are you using? you should use 20w50 , the thicker stuff may help it stop escaping

was the bore preoiled before removing and it is the residue?
also as fett has said
and is the oil drained from the carb dash pots?

Blue / white smoke is oil burning, so as above could be where it was put back together with a touch of oil - hench the starting, getting warm and repeating will clear it. Failing that you might be looking at a bad gasket / dirt in the gasket requiring rebuild.

FYI black smoke is un burnt fuel.

i think its possible a coule of bores have rust marks,if it dosent clear reasonably quickly id remove heads 3.5 can be rebored

I think James is correct. more than likely the bores have surface rust. If the smoke does not clear then it probably needs rebore and rings. Normally if its valve stem seals it will smoke most at idle or on de-acceleration not when reving.

Hi, for what it is worth, although I have never had a Rover V8 idle over the winter, I have had a few boats that were unused Oct to Mar.

Each time, until the engine had really been cooked they smoked - wouldn't worry at all until you have done at least a couple of hours at temperature.

By the way, if you want to rid yourself of the Weber, let me know, happily swop for my twin SU's.
