Our 2003 td4 has just ground to a halt, there's been no noises rumblings or warning signs. This morning with the wife driving it started holding back like the handbrake was coming on, then it spluttered and kicked the rear end out sideways so she parked it up.She said it made a clunk like something fell into something else. It will tick over fine but is very very reluctant to move, i managed to get it to move a bit but there's a very strong smell of oil and rubbing noise, and when i dipped the clutch it virtually stopped on the spot, so i've parked it up.
The clutch seems to still be working.
Any ideas apart from it being expensive?
