Hi all,

Recently had the disco remapped with Celtic tuning. The turbo has now started to squeal like a little piggie at approx 1800rpm and stops at 2500. Garage has looked for leaks and said the turbo is on the way out.

Question, should I replace with new or re-con and if so who is the best turbo engineering company to use please?

Oh and as it's just after Xmas I'm on a tight budget

you sure it is the turbo and not the exhaust manifold studs sheared?Put a spanner on all the nuts and see if you can turn em easily,just before you splash out on a turbo

Remove intake pipe on turbo and check blades in turbo prob missing a few bits, they all should look the same, had similar problems on another vehicle

You should be able to get the studs out if there sheared ,easy outs are good

Not necessarily, you may be able to get the old studs out, or drill and tap, then helicoil them.

If that is the problem weld nuts on to the studs this normally works as heat helps loosen the stud

Oh, so it might in fact be the turbo and not the manifold? Chap at garage said he listened to the turbo and said he could hear the bearings rattling????

Problem first started just after I had it remapped but then it was only heard for a few mil seconds, when under load and flooring it. Since then we went to France in the summer and again only lasted less than a second. Now it does it all the time i.e. At approx 1800rpm through to 2500rpm at 30mph. If I'm up to 50/60mph and floor it, the squeal isn't as loud and only last 1second?

Do you happen to know the easiest way to check if the studs are f$€#ked?

Take the pipe off will take you 2 mins then if you need to check studs you can one job at a time

Thank you very much biolandy, I will buy you a pint next time your in Cornwall. Just got back from indie land rover garage. One stud missing and the other sheared of. Gonna get the work done this sat morn for £85.00 all in. Checked the turbo and whilst it had a little play, he's felt a lot worse.

you can do the work yourself to save money,I had about 4 nuts/bolts sheared but were holding in place with rust-only when a spanner was put on did they drop out,its the gasket that sings in the gas flow-like you used to do with a bit of grass between ur thumbs as a kid.
My exhaust manifold was a bit warped so I flattened it with a belt sander-the old studs came out easily drilling a small hole and hammering a screwdriver in and then undoing them-cost me a couple of quid and a couple of hours-not a hard job.
Glad ur sorted-like you I thought turbo first as I have had one go before
