Hi All,

My '89 RR won't start, and is stuck outside work. The ignition lights are coming on, but the starter isn't turning. It started this morning, and I went to move it, but didn't get the engine idling properly before i stuck her in drive. She cut out, and won't start now!!!

What can I do?!!

First thing to check is the battery condition. If it has dropped too low, it will power things like dash lights, but won't even attempt to turn the starter. Does it click as you turn the key? i.e. the starter relay? Stick a multimeter across the battery, it should read at least 12.5v.

If you can, try jump starting it to see if that makes any difference. 'tho if your battery is completely dead you will need to bypass the battery altogether.

Other things to check - fuse box - starter relay.

Thanks Matt, I'll give it a try.

The thing that annoys me is that I had her started to move her, and her revs dipped a little low when I put her into gear. Not 5 seconds later when I tried to restart her, she wouldn't play. Not even ticking of the starter or anything!!

Auto? Wouldn't be that the sensor that tells the ignition that it is in P or N is knackered would it? Have you tried moving the gear lever up and down the range a bit to see if that makes any diff? Try N if it won't start in P etc.

Just guessing now! I know my wifes beemer won't even think about doing anything when you try and start it if the gear lever isn't in P or N (for obvious reasons!)

I though of that, but I can't seem to get it to make any difference. It's not starting on P or N....!!

Thanks for all your help Matt!

It's now done!! Cheated and got the AA out to her. So glad I did, it would have taken me ages other wise!! It took him just over an hour to diagnose and fix.

Turns out the spade connector on the starter solenoid was looking a little grim. He decided to change it to be on the safe side. Only problem was that when he took it off, the WHOLE wire came off in his hands. There was a male bullet connector on the other side. It came outta the loom somewhere and he couldn't find the female end. So he's had to hard wire it in again from the ignition to the solenoid. Could have gone anytime, and looks like it's just been working it's way loose!!

I can now drive home!!!
