no can't hear anything should the one in tank make a noise power to it but no noise?? it has always been faulty on gauge?

Td4 has a pump under the rear wheel arch, drivers side. Turn the ignition on but don't start the engine.
There should be a whining noise from the back for about 5-10 seconds.
If you can't hear this you need a new pump. Approx £100 + fitting if you can't do it.

you are in the year where the fuel pumps swapped positions if it is a early 2002 it could still be in the tank.

If it's the camshaft sensor it should start when it is cold, and he would hear the fuel pump running.

Richard, regardless of hearing the fuel pump running the engine wont start if the cam sensor is not providing the correct timing signal,

the cam signal is required on start up only, it tells the ecu that no 1 piston is on the compression stroke so it can fire the injector, after that it relies on the crank position sensor,

you are correct the sensor usually fails when its hot, but not always
