Hi, can anyone help me with a problem? It is a 99 Freelander. Today when driving it was fine, then all of a sudden its started hicking and fartin, losing power and eventually grinding to a halt. I had no acceleration unless I dropped into 1st gear. Unfortunately cant drive on A1M in 1st gear ! Had AA out, and they checked Distributor Cap, which had some oil in, suggested this may be the problem, so cleaned, but 1 mile up the road the problem started again ! Eventually had to be towed home.

Before I start replacing everything in the engine (as is normal), anyone have any ideas on what is happening?

I will replace dis cap in any event, together with o-rings/seals just in case.

dizzy cap is a good place to start, followed by oil seals.
You can order new ones for the cam shafts, dizzy cap is on inlet cam. Seals are around £4, you will need specialist tools to get the old seals out....................... these tools are 2mm drill bit and some self tapping screws. Drill two holes opposite each other at 180 degrees, screw in self tappers, then lever them out, along with the seal. To fit the new seal use a socket set or the old seal butted up against the new one to tap back in.

You may have to change the plugs and leads

many thanks for the reply. After getting someone to look at it (foc of course!) turns out I am the problem!! Thinking I was doing a good job, topped up oil and all other consumables! However put too much oil in, therefore when under pressure oil leaking into dis cap, causing sparks to go everywhere but where they should do hence lack of power!! So, did an oil change, cleaned dis cap - managed to blag a freebie from our local parts shop as must be their best customer (also think blonde hair helped lol), and hey presto freebie running great.

Lesson to be learnt for next time, but thanks for your help x
