Hi, my D4 SDV6 has done 104,000 miles, fully serviced and no previous issues. Recently noticed a ‘clack clack clack’ suddenly coming from the engine and need to diagnose it. It happens when engine is cold or warm, frequency is proportional to engine revs (it gets quicker when revs increase, then slower with gear change up). Sound appears to coming from about waist high on the engine but hard to tell.

Please listen to this video and let me know if you can help!

D4 clacking noise

Sound like big end tap, doesn't sound loud enough to be broken crank, but as above dont drive could be a much cheaper fix at this point
Thanks - sound advice! I’ll trailer it to the garage. Unfortunately I’m in France and JLR main dealer is my only option (locals drive Japanese kit). Just to prepare myself, if it’s a big end tap, or a crank, what kind of money would you expect to pay for the job?

Hi, I'm in France, south east Tarn, but there are a lot of us over here who would be willing to help/advise. Whereabouts are you? Depending where you are there may be independents who would be more willing to help you.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I’m in Hérault (34260) so actually pretty close to you! I’d really appreciate any advice because although I have a great local mechanic, he’s only got a small workshop and I was going to have to take it to JLR Beziers and pay through the nose (they have a reputation for ripping folks off too)!

Very grateful for anyone who knows of a decent alternative?

Cheers

Hi

Plus 1 what’s already been mentioned as indeed doesn’t sound right

Wonder if it would be worth to remove the engine oil filter , cut it open lay out flat to see if there’s any silver material inside as that also a good indicator if things are going wrong with the engine
thanks for the idea - I will definitely do that. Unfortunately since I posted the issue here I have come off my mountain bike and smashed my elbow up, so can’t use my left arm in the short term. I’ll hoik out the filter as soon as I can and post some pics of the results 👍

OK, I'll have a word with my French neighbour who has a great many LR products including like yours and who too is facing a rebuild of his SDV6, we are minutes from the Aude / Hérault border, just south of Mazamet. We know the area where you're based.
I'll let you know what he says. How is your French? and how good at spanner twirling are you?
I haven't read to the end of the thread yet, but I will say that before you go off to any JLR garage it will be as well to, as far as possible, establish what the damage is and even a small garage ought to be able to take the sump off and check the bearings and crank for damage.

Et bonne chance ...

Hi again, thank you so much for offering to have a word with your neighbour! It’s bizarre that we live so close… My French is passable but my wife and kids are fluent, so not an issue.

I’m a self-taught spannerist, not massively experienced but enthusiastic and happy to have a go (I’ve done basic servicing - oils, filters, brakes etc - on our family cars for some years and tend to learn from YouTube if it’s not obvious what to do. I’m a bit limited by only having a driveway to work on and only basic tools (no hoist or lift etc).

I’ll call in to see my local mechanic friend tomorrow and ask him if he could inspect the crank for me 👍

Sorry to hear that and u have a speedy recovery

No probs and happy to help as part of the many other posts

Indeed doesn’t take long to remove the oil filter to see if there are any metal shards within it

At least then it gives u a general idea , hope u don’t mind me also saying plse ensure any garage that checks it doesn’t try and turn it over

Wishing u all the very best that it isn’t catastrophic

You are in the same boat as a lot of us as regards only having a driveway to work on, that is where I have to do all my work..

What is massively bizarre is that the bloke who moved in next to us has more LR products than you can shake a stick at. But he has more or less got to the end of road with the more modern ones as he is so sick of them breaking down on him, but he has quite a few Defenders and earlier series ones.

Do you have, or can you get hold of, a stethoscope or even just a longish piece of plastic tubing that you can use to listen closely to the noise and try and locate it more accurately?

Or do you know how to "stick it"? I.e. put one end of a stick against the engine in various places and the other end to your ear, carefully, to try and locate it?
If you can do that and zero in on it it might help us help you, if you see what I mean.

I know very little about SDv6s sadly.
