Well the landy is still not happy.
A few weeks back i was alerted to a strange metal grinding sound coming from under the truck when letting off the throttle in 5th gear at about 50+mph.
Though it might be the front axle low on oil and both swival balls where leaking.
I re-build both hubs with new balls and gaskets then put fresh oil in the axle.

Or seemed fine however i heard it again today and also noticed that when i pull away i often get a squeak and/or rattle from the gearbox/prop area.
Had a look underneath and theres a lot of oil everywhere which is making it difficult to work out where its coming from.

Are there particular places on the R380 gearbox and transfer box that they leak?

I took a quick picture of the underside to try and give people a better idea of what i'm dealing with.

Ment to be using the truck next week for some heavy towing jobs so i'm desperate to find the problem and fix it asap.

Any help would be greatly appricated.

If u'll get certain that is somewhere between the gearbox and TB then think about these ICV100000 and FTC4939.
 
normal ones for leaking are the transfer box seal / to gearbox mainshaft. take the transfer box off and you will see oil around the lip of the seal, before that check that none of the bolts have come loose on the transfer box to gearbox joint - have had the top one on the front side drop out before now!!
 
Is it a lot of work involved removing the transfer box?
Changed the gearbox and transfer box complete before and that was a pain lol.
Can i see the seal from the top, through the centre console?
 
the seal cannot be seen - only with transfer box removed. did one yesterday - took me 3 hours in total to do (used to doing them), easy enough to do just a lump of a weight!! Easier to remove handbrake assembley first -saves on the weight.
 
Ok duely noted, will have a go at tightening all the bolts tonight. Failing that i'll have to get a new seal and tackle it next week.
 
the 2 bolts that seem to come loose are the ones on the front side of the tranny - beside the gearbox and amongst the levers for low/high box - can only just be seen!!
 
I took my whole transmission out cos the main box needed repair.

I put a new input seal on the transfer box just for good measure, even though it wasn't leaking.

All back together, and now it leaks!! GRRRR!

I fitted the seal so it was pushed in just below the outer level of the transfer case input face.

Is this about right or did I not push it in far enough, hence the leak?

Regards your grinding noise mate, if your oils aren't particularly low then the leak shouldn't particularly matter...

Also sniff the oil to try to decide what it is first!

I know I'm hi-jacking the thread, but...
Does this apply to auto boxes as well? I am wondering if it is where my dripping ATF is coming from
 
Have you checked the UJ's on the props? Mine sounded as if it was dragging a chain underneath occasionally and when i took a closer look one of the needle roller bearings had run dry and just starting to break up. This only relates to the squeling/rattling noise not the oil leak.

FTC4939, transfer box output seal, did mine last week. Box looked same as that, luckily my front prop was already off so only a quick job, drain the box oil first tho, (if there's any left).
 
Well bit of an update on this one.
Drove the nearside up on to a pair of ramps to get a better view. Oil doesn't appear to be leaking from the seal, nor from the transfer to gearbox bolts.
Confused we looked closer and realised the round flat vertical plate on the back of the transfer box was far wetter than anything else, particularly two bolt that were soaked.
This was then confermed by being able to hand tighten said bolts.
Hopefully the torque wench and a 17mm socket have solved the problem. However i will be steam cleaning the underside and keeping an eye on it over the next few weeks.

Top work :)

If it ain't got a gasket on it, it's worth taking them two plates off and running sealant round them both and then torque all the bolts.

Future reference :)
 
Cheers mate. I think someone has put some sealant on it in the past, however i will know for sure when i clean it later this afternoon.
Also got some lock-tight going spare if the bolts decide to loosen up again.
