Finally got round to joining after lurking for answers!. Have had a Freelander (TD4) - which did 130K before it moved on with an interesting transmission noise, Discovery (TD5) which we had for nearly 10 years and was up to 145K when it moved on, a CSW 200Tdi, erm which wasn't so good after a problem with a wall and some ice, and now a CSW 300Tdi which at the moment appears to be relatively problem free.

What is next - decent tyres before the Snow arrives ( The well worn Grabber TR's not brill in deep snow ..) - open to suggestions!

WELCOME! from west of the Pennines Sorry, can't help you with tyre suggestions as I'm not that experienced myself. Some big, chunky ones should suffice

Mud tyres are good in deep snow, a/t's are good all rounders but nothing beats proper winter tyres for ice and compacted snow cold temperatures etc

Yes plus they have thin cuts within the rubber nodes that grip the road surface and allow the tread blocks to move a little to create heat and grip better, they don't last long above 10-12 degrees though due to the softer compound.

They're a legal requirement in Germany, Sweden etc in winter months

Thanks for that - have two winter tyres on the VW and never got stuck. The 110 was good in deep snow last year, but stopping in deep snow was interesting... I presume the treads just filled with snow.
Not sure I can afford a second set of tyres - any recommendations for winter tyres if I go that way? (The Michelin on the VW have been brilliant)
Finally read that the change-over temperature on winters is around 7C and I have never had them on the VW above 10C
