interesting thread this,
i've just stripped my overdrive, had no idea how bad it was inside until this week.
I need all new bearings and seals, but hoping I'll get away with the shafts/
gears were fine though.
the costs on some of the landy suppliers are really off putting,
i took the parts list from here:

to a bearing shop this week, and they seemed really confident they could beat the prices.
just waiting for a quote so i can get started soon.

Probably not helped by a very small oil quantity. Whether they're tough or not is a bit irrelevant when in practice they're a weak point in the transmission. Used with caution they're great and I'm a big fan.
I've just done exactly this, after running my Overdrive untouched for the last 14 years with a Rover V8 in front of it (I've rebuilt the gearbox 3 times). I only decided to strip it as the input splines were worn out, so new input sleeve and a costly new main shaft were needed.
All the bearings and seals I got from "Simply bearings" online at much less than half the price of any of the Land Rover parts suppliers, plus what I'm getting are SKF or FAG quality items.
It's beautifully built inside that overdrive, if only the gearbox was designed the same way.
My overdrive is fine in normal but if you try to engage it it does not like it one bit. I'm not even sure if it is possible to engage it now.
It used to be fine to engage but you had to double declutch to disengage. When is was engaged it was VERY loud.
I am not looking forward to seeing what's left of the insides of it when I pull it apart.
