I think its well worth looking into getting an Ex-MOD direct from a supplier. As far as I know they are all reconned prior to being sold as civilian vehicals. I know for certain that mine had a fully reconned engine and the rest of the vehical is in very good contition!

Anyway, mine was originally purchased from the following company.

The main concern is that it is genuine! You do get some people painting some camo on a landy and telling everyone that it is EX-MOD. But if it comming from a dealer then there should be all the military info with it i.e. MOD licence number.

If you buy privatly then ask if they have these original documents. Also on most EX MOD's the light switch will be in the centre of the dash (large black knob "so to speak!") on this switch you will see a setting for SL & CONV. At the back of the truck the rear diff will be painted white. If you switch the lights to CONV then a light should shine off this white rear diff. This is convoy mode and is used when in convoy in hostile territory so as helicopters and such cant see the lights from the sky but each vehical can see to follow.

they int reconned but they are brought to a road worthy state, pretty much up to mot standard but also ensuring everything works. course its not unknown for a working part to be put on for the inspection then removed afterwards.

OK maybe i worded that worng. The entire thing is not reconned. But mine and many others I have seen & heard of do have fully reconned engines! Stamped and dated with a plate detailing the recon.

Now as long as the rest of the vehical has been cared for. Which the Army generally do. Then you got yourself a damn good buy in my opinion.
 
ok, tried crooks, blanchards and exmod on the web, no one seems to have any 90 hard tops!?!?!

any other places to check (especially in the newcastle area??)

onle last question to those who have ex mod landies - from all of the interior pics i have seen they dont have carpets or door cards/trims - is that the case with all of them??

Carpets?? What do you want them for?? haha

No, mine has no carpets or fancy plastic trim!

and i have never seen one that has.
 
One more thing to bare in mind when buying an ex-mod. Is that you want to make sure your getting a 12v model.

I know that many of the older ones were 24v. Its not the end of the world but can be more expensive if replacing startert or alternator so on....

Its also not the end of the world if it isnt a hardtop when you buy it. You can always get your hands on the top and back door and fit it after. Then you have a spare ragtop for use in the summer if you wish to swap and change!
 
cheers for that, I wondered if they had trim as i am after a more 'basic' vehicle. Went to see a over the top modded one a few nights back and decided that i wasnt keen on the trim bits and carpets etc.

How weatherproof is the canvass top? spotted a real nice looking one in NATO sand/desert colour but is a soft top (which i like the look of but not sure of practicality when winter arrives again.

If it's a truckcab they warm up quicker than an hardtop because theirs less space to heat up. you can get a fume curtain for the full softtops but their still a bit drafty. Biggest problem with a soft top is security. It's too easy to get into the back. However You could sell the softtop and Buy & fit an Hardtop and still have some dosh leftover from the sale.
 
I have the soft top for mine but it has never been on the vehical while i have owned it. I have kept it cus its in real good nick and helps keep the value in the vehical if you keep all the orginal MOD bits.

I did have a conversation with a guy on here who kept his on. He was quite happy with it and one point he did make was that you dont get the age old condensation drip off the sunroof of a hardtop (which can get on your tits!).

To be honest i would go with what you feel is best but just to give you some idea i will cost out my rebuild.
1995 300tdi 90,100k,good tyres,fsh lots of genuine accories.A really mint example.£5,000
Full respray in mettalic paint inside and out (£1,500).New crossmember fitted ,New rear wing,all new lights with td5 stlye reverse and fog,Repair tub,Recon axle,4x springs and shocks(decarbon 1"lift),5 boost alloys with BFG mud terrains,full service,new number plates,new bumper,headlight surrounds,grillle,steamclean and waxoyl,discs,pads all round,snorkel fully fited,
All this and incuding all the labour came to £3,500.
Then plus the original truck @£5,000.The engine was also fully rebuilt a year before wich did cost another £900(taken out,rebuilt and put back) But there is no need to re-build unless there is something wrong.
All this work was carried out by a local Land rover specialist.

Whats the longest time annyone has been looking for a Landy then? Dees 5 years cut it?

.... OK, I havent been looking that long at all, but have just said Yes to an Ex-MOD soft top (on the hunt for a hard top and door now!)

I ended up blasting the Land Rover budget and my bike test and new bikes (x2) - decided that after this long, I might as well have one as I am in a better financial place, and have gotten the 2 wheel bug out the system!

Haha, its sorted now!!

Was a good few years having the bike though .... will miss it a little bit in the summer no doubt!
