Ive covered a thousand miles or so since changing the heater matrix and all of a sudden the driver side climate control only blows cold. near side of dash is fine, blows warm, im not losing coolant and the matrix is getting plenty of heat. I guess something has gone wrong with the driver side heater control mechanism - any suggestions??
I have run a search but couldnt find anything..

As u say " something has gone wrong with the driver side heater control mechanism".
The operating cable from the rotary hot/cold dial to the damper on the drivers side has come adrift at one end...maybe.

Ok thanks, in which case would it be accessible by removing heater switch fascia or another dash out job?(!!!)

You may be able to look in under the fuse cover. undo the two 1/4 turn screws under the steering column, and you should see the mechanism on the side of the heater assembly. either the wire has come out, or the screw holding the whole lot together has become loose and given up

Spot on! The cable had disconnected from the pin, you can just about see in photo above the matrix pipes:
